Mod release speculation thread

…this is exactly why the Devs aren’t giving out more status updates - people read way too much into them and go off on wild tangents with their theories so I understand exactly why the take the position they do. And why something as simple as a “something was changed today” message is still too much, tho I’m still curious what a fake one might do…

I guess I missed the part where the Devs give a shit what kind of nonsense is posted on this forum, let alone are so upset by it that it affects their entire PR/Media schedule. If this is the case (it isn’t) then why have such vague, nonspecific twitter updates? It begs for speculation. I mean, what else are we going to do in the next month before the next twitter update if not speculate, besides post lists of things?

Just as Angdraug said, the media blackout on all Xen related material (which includes things like the Manta and Hivehand which appear in HL long before the player reaches Xen) does not in anyway imply at what point in the development process any one part of Xen is being tackled, nor how far along any of the Xen material is.

Guys, Raminator thought about telling us to speculate and DIDN’T, he must NOT want us to speculate! Which can only mean one thing: he accidentally told us something top-secret about the mod! Seriously though, the manta ray model could be the first model they’re working on, and after five years, they are almost done making its butthole look PERFECT. When you make an assumption, you make an ASS out of U and MPTION.

I personally think it’s almost done anyway as one of the Twitter updates states “we will release it this year.Chill out dudes and dudettes”. I don’t think that means they’re working on it for another 5 years.of course I could be wrong though…

Thats not “too logical,” its a literal interpretation devoid of anything more logical than basic reading comprehension.

Here’s the logic:

1. fact: “someone has made or is in the progress of making the Manta model”
2. fact: “manta ray poop chute” is a minor detail

Conclusion 1: the manta model is essentially done, save polish.

3. fact: Mantas are a Xen creature
4. informed speculation: Xen is the last area of the game that requires completion, as implied by the media blackout

Conclusion 2: a near-complete manta model (conclusion 1) implies that development is focused on the final areas of the game (see points 3,4), that it is focused on polish rather than content creation (point 2).

Last I checked modelling and mapping are two completely different areas of development. Progress in one area is therefore non-indicative of progress in the other.
Furthermore, who’s to say that they’re modelling everything in order of appearance?

In summary, this logic leads me to believe that the mod is in fact “almost done.” This isn’t really a controversial conclusion, we all know that there’s only 4 months left in 2009.

Obviously the mod is almost done, because yes, it shall be released within the next four months. I was just saying that the twitter update doesn’t indicate any sort of progress (which, again, doesn’t mean I’m saying there has been little or no progress).
Except that Black Mesa is dead. obvsly

I think you guys are reading into the ‘details’ too much as ‘putting finishing touches on the game’ which may be true for some parts, and less others. You’ve seen our media and notice that we pay attention to detail in the parts of the game we’ve shown you; why would this twitter update mentioning ‘detail’ imply that the game is nearing completion? I fail to follow any of the logic in this thread.

We’ve also begun tackling the final content of the game, some of the most creative and technically challenging stuff we’ve had to do yet.

I may be way off here, but I always took that to be referring to Xen stuff.

I was under the impression that the mod was kind of being done all at once. I could be wrong, but this is always how ive thought of it.

In the beginning they had to map out the first few parts of the levels as a team in order to get the idea of how their mod was going to look. But after those stages they broke off into groups and started working. Now I can not 100% make certain that this was also done with Xen. The team may have wanted to accomplish this as a whole just like the beginning so it could be done correctly and wrap up the mod so to speak (does that even make sense?).
