Mod Progrss Bar

People ask us all the time how far along the mod is.
Many websites feature a progress bar, that fills up as the mod develops.

Some bars are percent based, eg. 60% done, 70% done.
Others are stage based, eg. Pre-Alpha, Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc.

It would be very cool if the mod could have a progress bar somewhere.

It has been suggested and flamed already.

I have a progress bar right here:

EDIT: Oh, dear.

^Oh noes censorship.

Also, in b4

I remember seeing a “Progress Bar” on the site a while ago that was a static image at 50%.

That would be pretty optimistic :stuck_out_tongue:

I love this idea because I love getting information about how the mod is going (otherwise why the hell would I read this website). If you don’t love this idea, you might have some tough self-reappraisal and reflection to do (unless you’re on the BM :s team, in which case its semi-obvious why you’d hate it).

A site I think of as a prime example of the right balance between keeping development mysterious (after all, it’s proprietary information) but also keeping the community informed and happy, is Unknown Worlds NS2 site. Their developer video commentary is top-notch (but rarely updated) and their twitter feed is regularly updated and interesting. And they occasionally post WIPs and concept art and even sometimes respond to user feedback! Of course, they are selling the game, so they have more than the usual motivation to keep their community happy.

Or maybe I would rather give the devs their space and let them work according to their own daily rhythm.

Yes, but most of them are almost never accurate.

I dunno how, since it’s already happened. For this mod. It was on either GN or LF, though.

I’m not following you - how would a “progress bar” on this website prevent the devs from working according to their own daily rhythms?

Oh, sorry I didn’t make myself clear. I meant that including a progress bar might make even more people complain not only about the mod not being released, but also about the progress bar not being updated. I personally would prefer to see people whine only about one thing, and not about two :stuck_out_tongue:

Wouldnt this solve that problem?
Fans dont know when to expect the mod to be released so a progress bar would let them know its on its way, but its not here yet.

It would only need to be updated after a major milestone, Alpha to Beta, or if percents, 60 to 70.

Or if people complain about it not being updated, Hubicorn can bump it from 60% to 60.01%*… anyway, someone being more concerned about what the community may or may not whine about (that they whine about anyway) than gaining insight into the development of the game they are allegedly following the development of, is exactly what my OP was referring to.

*I know its not going to happen so don’t bother flaming me

It’d be all, “OMFG THE BAR DIDNT MOV IN 3 DAYS MOD IS DEAD!!1!!,”

I like to think the mod is just too finished for the devs to change anything about it or the website.

no cuz then you guys would really see how far behind we are. and that would be detrimental to the mood of the forums.

=p
