Missing Non-English Characters from Subtitles

I have been notified by several parties of an issue regarding any closed captioning (besides English), where non-english characters will not show up.

For instance, in Spanish, already included with the mod, Anomalous Materials is translated into “Materiales Anómalos”, but the text says “Materiales AnA malos”; no accents show up.

Same with Turkish (which is in the works), saved in Unicode:

In this picture, it should say OLAĞANÜSTÜ, but the Ğ is missing.

This is what it looks like when the Turkish file is saved in UCS-2 Little Endian format:

I noticed the font the mod works with is DIN 1451 MittelSchrift, but according to the character map, it should at least have support for the Spanish characters.

Any help would be appreciated!

I just came here to write the same. Spanish characters are missing, but they are only missing in the big ingame texts (chapter titles, information during the train in the first chapter about gordon status and black mesa, etc…), the ingame subtitles works fine for me.

Also, the subtitles for radio comunications (at least in the first chapters) and train radio aren’t visible. (i don’t known if there are subtitles for that).

BTW, small glitches for an AWESOME work! congrats for the release!

Even though I added Turkish characters to the font, it’s still not showing in-game.

Hi there, I bring you the solution. In the attachment is an edited copy of DIN font, with all the European accents added.

qabriel, for Turkish, you way want to extend the ranges of the fonts in the ClientScheme.res fonts section.

I experienced this as well. It seems there is a text file missing or such, that would apply labels to resources in various sections of the menu and game. For example, my menu looks like this:

And during the tram ride, I received this text instead of “Subject: Gordon Freeman”, etc:

BaTz281, your error appears when the mod is not installed in the right directory. Make sure you’ve installed it to Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\BMS.

Right you are, thank you for the fast reply! Appreciated

How to do that exactly?

Open the file BMS/resource/ClientScheme.res with a text editor. Go to fonts, then find the ones with DIN and a “range” code, and add a higher number on the right.

Of course, this would work if the range section is already active, but it isn’t, so it already should allow all the possible characters. There’s a similar bug happening on other mod, GoldenEye: Source, where the extended chars should be online but the Polish version has some character issues. Might be related to the second screen mentioned.

Now that I saw the screenshot, I can confirm that the font lacks the character you mention. Funningly enough, the version released with this mod of DIN didn’t have all the basic European accents (Unlike the example posted at the topic start). I’ll try to add the Latin-Extended B characters.

EDIT: I have updated my modified DIN font. This time contains Latin Extended-B (Turkish, Hungarian, Eastern Languages…) accented characters, 98% complete.

Well, I’ve copied your edited font to resource folder as well as to Windows/Font folder.
But they’re still broken.

I see. We’ll have to check the code then.

The same problem (with original & downloaded fonts).

Testing Czech fonts: “ěščřžýáíéúů ĚŠČŘŽÝÁÍÉÚŮ”

Example, edited file bms_czech.txt,

In level choice is all OK:

In game, “Ř” is shown as “X”:

That’s the same problem that happened in GE: S. Menus were OK, but custom fonts didn’t looked so good.

I found temporary solution for similar problem with Russian characters (cyrillic), you can try this for Polish:

Open file \steamapps\sourcemods\BMS\resourceClientScheme.res
Find section “CenterPrintText” (subsection of Fonts). Then working in this section only.
There are several options, the most appropriate -
delete the line
“custom” “1”

(there are other ways to do the same, for example delete the line “antialias” “1”, but this look worse because antialiasing off)

Hereupon the Russian characters will render by some system Unicode font, it’s probably Tahoma, while the English characters remain the way they were.
So if you need a combination of Russian and English characters in same font - have to sacrifice even English font and replace “DIN 1451 Mittelschrift” to “Tahoma”.

Viva Tahoma…

P.S. Thanks to IlDucci for hint.

This is for problem with titles in center only, for other titles either should analyze the other sections… or you something screwed up, for example installed the game incorrectly.

Open file \steamapps\sourcemods\BMS\resource\ClientScheme.res
Find section “CenterPrintText” (subsection of Fonts). Then working in this section only.
There are several options, the most appropriate -
delete the line
“custom” “1”

This is solution, thanks!!

About the Italian subs…

They are pretty good, except that sometimes they’re badly written with gross typo error(as notified above) or simply badly traducted(ditto).

But the worst thing, imho, is that sometimes(too often  ), the subs misses at all: for example in the chapter “Forget about Freeman”, the HECU radio-speaker who announces the retreat of the military forces from the base is not subtitled(and this is an important talking for the game plot!). Sometimes soldiers voices and dialogues and some scientists/sec guards talking don’t get subs, too.

Anyway, despite of this few bugs, you’ve made an incredible job. 10/10!

Thank you very much, I will tell this to the GE: S team as well.

Thank you for the fast reply. o/

Sorry, that was for siSINka, I forgot to quote him. My bad Xp.
