Memorable Moments in Black Mesa?

The couple of instances with headcrab zombies slowly banging their heads against the wall. I don’t know why, but that was tremendously effective and made them rather more disturbing somehow.

The sequence with the people trapped in an elevator in Unforeseen Consequences - it was very well acted and had quite an effect on me when I heard it.

In apprehension… The puzzle that you had to put the boyes under the platform so you could jump across was really well done and well thought out.

Infact it was the perfect physics puzzle based on the original

Actually that one came from Half Life Source.

Not really. The one in Half-Life Source was similar to the original in that you used the crowbar to break a lock that allows floaty barrels to float upward and do the same thing.

The one in Black Mesa isn’t really the same since in Half-Life Source you can’t pick things up. Rather, the Black Mesa puzzle is clearly inspired by an identical puzzle from Half-Life 2, involving the airboat and a jumping ramp.

I find myself constantly managing to break the flow of the in-game soundtrack. It seems like whenever music starts kicking in I fail at something. When the music in the surface part of We’ve Got Hostiles peaks I get caught off guard by a couple of HECU and promptly killed, when I return from the power arm of Blast Pit I fail the jump over the hole in the platform and fall to my dea- I mean loading screen (same deal in the big room of floaty boxes), I get my ass kicked in the fight outside on the surface in On a Rail and on the second attempt I end up setting up a tripmine and ambushing the HECU as they come in groups through the door (not exactly a fitting strategy for the intense fight music…).

I wish I could have just one moment where the music actually plays from start to end on first try without me dying, and preferably during an actiony bit.

But that aside, so far (at the end of On a Rail) I think my most memorable parts are the rocket launch, when the tentacle in Blast Pit breaks into the control room to grab the scientist, and the ambient sounds in the early part of Blast Pit, if my ears could orgasm they would.

Bjoss, if you want what you’re wishing for, just hold out until the Apache Cliffside showdown.

It’s good.

1.) The hivehand pickup scene
2.) Jets flying by in surface tension plus the airstrike
3.) The ambush in questionable ethics
4.) Both the assasin fights
5.) The manta ray vs. jets scene
6.) Popping out of all the little holes in surface tension while fighting a tank and dozens
of HECU grunts guerillia style
7.) Seeing the new Garguanta the first time in power up
8.) pretty much the whole game

i LOVE THE ROCKET LAUNCH SEQUENCE TOO

I really like Manta Rays in this mod, too bad they can’t be fought :frowning:

The Resonance Cascade sequence at the end of Anomalous Materials was really, really nice compared to the original version. All the giant machinery and things going around you definitely makes you feel that you are part of something big and the disaster that follows is even bigger than all the machinery and test chamber that precedes it.

I was kind of sad when I killed my first Vortiguant by the way. I remember them as allies from HL 2. Also I was kind of afraid of them too, because they were very tough in HL2 but then I remembered this is HL 1 and they are merely slaves here.

Ah and also, it was really nice to see Eli Vance and Doctor Kleiner.

Wheres the Manta ray vs. Jet scene? the only time I see them both together is when a Jet is trailing a Manta ray in ST

Meeting Dr Kleiner and Eli

The moment in Blast Pit where you have to pass the tentacles one last time to get upstairs and burn it. With that epic music kicking in the moment you enter the room.

The second gargantua you run from, you look behind you and see it rushing towards you, crushing cars like they’re cardboard boxes.

Pretty much all the moments with the soundtrack kicking in really. Joel Nielsen really nailed it. I’d even go as far to say I prefer his work over that of Kelly Bailey. He retains the style of the original, whilst adding his own touch. Love that it’s more rock-oriented, too.

That was a such a visceral moment. I couldn’t help but think, “It’s finally here…”

That aside, the bombing during the cliffside sequence blew me away as well. I was mostly just impressed by the harriers making another appearance, and didn’t realize what they were doing right up until the building fucking exploded.

I really love all the Surface Tension chapter. With the AI adjusted, obviously. That level is long and epic. It’s an all out war between
Xen and the HECU. So many things happen…and the soundtrack…
Good lord…

Yes, Surface Tension is 100% the best chapter of the game, along with Questionable Ethics D:

I absolutely love Questionable Ethics. It’s seriously my new favorite chapter of Black Mesa.

In Half-Life it was kind of meh. But Black Mesa made it the most awesome thing ever, I love it.

Its in “forget about freeman” when you leave the canals by a ladder and suddenly face a tank and about a dozen marines

going through Office Complex with my good buddy security guard
see scientists get dragged into a vent screaming bloody murder and get ripped to pieces
security guard says “Man, how cool is this?!”
mfw

Say hi again to my bros Kleiner and Vance

Burn that tentacle in blast pit

the ambush in questionable ethics

Whole surface tension chapter, you’re always on the edge (sometime literally!)
