Is there any way to manually install mods, or has it been removed? I tried installing a mod for 2012 Black Mesa, with minimal hopes that it would work (I mostly wanted to laugh at how broken it would be), but it didn’t work at all.
I installed it to Black Mesa\bms\custom like most Source games, but unlike mods for other games, I didn’t even get an automatic soundcache file generated. This leads be to believe that the custom folder doesn’t work.
So, am I doing it wrong, or is the workshop the only way to install mods for the Steam release of Black Mesa?
I’ve had occasional success by mounting the additional content by modifying gameinfo.txt. You might have to play around with it a little (read: a lot) before you start seeing results, though. You’ll probably also want to unsubscribe from all Steam workshop mods in order to minimize the chance of unexpected conflicts.
You have to put custom VPK’s in common\Black Mesa\bms\addons, NOT in the workshop folder.
Really? Why doesn’t the \Black Mesa\bms\custom folder work like all other Source games have had since Steampipe?
Most Source games explicitly mount the custom folder somewhere in the gameinfo.txt. Black Mesa doesn’t, for some reason.
I… THINK you might be able to re-enable it by adding the entry to gameinfo.txt. I haven’t tried it though.
Actual worst Source game ever.
Alright, so it “worked” when I put it in \bms\addons as a .vpk (quotation marks because with how buggy the mod was I don’t think it can be considered functional), now how might I go about mounting \custom\ in gameinfo.txt properly? I’d like to test it out.
I’d go so far as to say it’s literally Hitler.
But it kinda sucks that we won’t be seeing a Source 2 version of Black Mesa, for reasons just like this.
I bet it would run smooth as hell and look just as slick, with less modding hassle.
But I can’t imagine a port would be a speedy process.
