On that subject I just saw Oblivion. There was some weird mixing going on in the dialog. There was one moment where I could hear the mic noise from the on-set voices that cut in and out before and after every line. It was pretty rough. That being said, the movie was pretty fucking beautiful. I recommend it to anyone into Ron Cobb or Syd Mead.
Yeah I just saw Oblivion last night. I really liked it. It was as xalener said, very beautiful. I also agree with one reviewer who said it was basically a love letter to science fiction. It uses a lot of themes and imagery from classic sci-fi movies, but it feels intentional and respectful.
I also finally sat down and watched a couple of movies all the way through that the internet would probably think it was sacrilegious I hadnāt seen yet: V for Vendetta and Dumb and Dumber. V for Vendetta was pretty good, Hugoās performance was great, even from behind a mask. Dumb and Dumber, well, I donāt think thereās much to be said about that one. Itās stupid and itās hilarious. Since I watched them on TV though I got to have a few more laughs at the censorsā expense. I mean, seriously, the whole āass but not holeā thing? Censor every instance of the f-bomb but leave in gratuitous amounts of blood spilling? I really have no idea what these guys are thinking.
Yeah, people are surprisingly judgmental like that.
I hope there will be more respectable Sci Fi films like Oblivion in the near future. Iām pretty sure Joe Kosinski, Niel Blomkamp, and Duncan Jones will be the ones to save sci fi from the claws of the half assed interpretations of studio execs trying to have the final say.
Assuming youāre American, I think itās an American thing. For some reason violence is no big deal but sex and words are. Itās fucking idiotic and I wish it would die soon along with the generation that enforces it. One can only be so hopeful.
Also I hate Oblivionās song. I hate it because I love the actual song, and the melody outlined by the vocals, but god damn it I canāt stand the voice and the lyrics are some shitty 90s anime intro levels of cheesy.
I just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind starring Jim Carrey. It was surprisingly dark, I was expecting more of a romantic comedy, but Carrey surprised me. The movie was, overall, really good the way it portrayed memories and such. It reminded me of Memento, which is another good memory-type movie. Itās one of those movies that doesnāt make much sense until the very end.
its a real shame jim carrey is barely in movies anymore
Saw Iron Man 3. The plot feels weird and rushed, explosions still looks nice, and damn it I had high expectations for the Mandarin, only to be disappointed by his characterā¦
Jackie Brown, a Tarantino that slipped under my Radar before. Was pretty good, not under his best works though.
Iron Man 3. I liked it. This entry in the series felt like it had a lot more at stake than the second, and his enemy was tougher and rather disturbing, much more threatening than Whiplash and his drones. Although I will agree with Nerdguy, the plot is a little strangeā¦for example, [color=ā#252525ā]we barely get to know anything about Maya and her motivations before she dies. It seemed like she was going to be important and ended up being just a bit of backstory really.
I heard that Oblivion got pretty terrible reviews. I did want to see it though, and people here seem to think it was at least decent.
I just saw Iron Man 3 as well. Thought it was really good.
You should see Oblivion, it is really quite good and I canāt really fathom why it would get bad reviews. I could understand mediocre but bad? The beautiful visuals and Tom Cruiseās acting alone should put it into the range of about two stars, and I think the plot and references are enough to bump it to a solid three or so. Itās not like itās the next 2001 or Star Wars or anything, but itās a good sci-fi flick.
So I watched Looper because the trailers looked cool and it got rave reviews, but IMHO it was one of the worst movies Iāve ever seen.
It has gratuitous, deliberately gut-wrenching levels of violence, a plot that barely made sense, infuriating amounts of drug use and 100% certified unlikeable characters. I feel almost betrayed, because this movie had great potential. It really couldāve, no, shouldāve been good, but it was executed poorly and it was generally predictable. A sad fate for a good idea.
Also Iām sorry if I offend anyone who loved it but I just couldnāt stand it.
i thought it was pretty rad except the whole telekinesis thing and JGLās goofball lipstick
Saw Iron Man 3 yesterday. It was fun: no exaggerations, no hyper-complex plot or twist, smart and well-paced jokes, just a good Saturday evening movie. Not that it will be engraved in my top 10 list of all times, but did a good job at entertaining me and my friends for the evening.
On a side note: anyone interested in the upcoming āThe Great Gatsbyā? Because I saw the trailer just before IM3, and it was appealing indeed. Not only because of the presence of DiCaprio (which I have extremely re-evaluated in a positive way from āBlood Diamondā onwards) Tobey Maguire or Carey Mulligan (loved āDriveā), but it gave me a pleasant impression of mystery and wickedness. I know the book is a masterpiece of contemporary (?) literature, but I never dared touching it.
So, from someone better informed than me: should I be correct in expecting something great?
Itās a book everyone has read (or at least complained about having to read) in school. Iām looking forward to it. The 70s version is neat for its goofy ass blank acting and It will be nice to see a version that thinks itās hot shit
Dicaprioās a QT and I like watching his face shrink on his head with each passing year
Not in Italy, unfortunatelyā¦
Well, Iāll keep an eye on it, then.
Iron Man 3. I loved it for the most part, but something was bothering me the entire time. The stockpile of suits. Why didnāt he call another one when 42 ended up on Pepper? why did he stick with it all movie when he had so many others that he could call from? Why didnāt he fly to the Stark Tower in New York to fabricate a new one? (I know he gets panic attacks from New York, but still). These arenāt big enough problems for me to write off the entire thing, but I was thinking about it even before they revealed just how many suits there were (I could easily guess when they showed it was Mark 42 in the living room).
Well, I donāt know why he didnāt get another one while his house was being destroyed, but I think for the rest of the movie, it probably had something to do with [color=ā#151515ā]Jarvis being screwed up/offline. Jarvis, where his software actually resides and such, is never really fully explained, but I get the feeling that Tony did something like cache a local version of Jarvis on his suit that would communicate with a central server that controlled the rest of his stuff, possibly as a technical limitation. Or maybe his security measures require some biometric readings to confirm itās him before he can control Jarvis, and the suit was what was supposed to do that. In any case, I donāt think he could just call Jarvis on any phone to tell him to send him another suit. Plus I think he was trying to make the most of supposedly being dead. Iām probably just over thinking it though, it may just be a legit plot hole/character oversight.
I watched Jack Reacher tonight. I liked it pretty well, though I think it was at its best when [color=ā#151515ā]it was more crime drama than action movie. The action scenes were well done, mind you, but I would have liked it better if it hadnāt just devolved into a shootout at the end.
I forgot to mention, I now feel kind of coerced to see After Earth. I originally had no intention of seeing it, since it looks rather dumb to me, but the latest trailer that came before Iron Man 3 used an unfair psychological tactic. They used Deus Ex music. Specifically, the song Icarus, from Human Revolution. Now I canāt help it, I think of the trailer and I want to see it because of that music. Freaking trailer makers are masters of an art, I tell you what.
Iron Man 3.
Certainly the weakest one of the 3, but still entertaining as fuck. There were some shady jumps in time at some points, as if they did some heavy cutting in post, but overall⦠Good.
Also, the post-credit scene wasnāt that revealing, especially not when compared to all the previous Avenger-related superhero movies.
the longass trailer for fast 6 or whatever they played first was the most enjoyable part of that movie experience but i thought it was at least better than the last iron man movie or any of the other garbage avengers things ive seen over the last few years. there were a lot of individual bits that were interesting they just formed into kind of a weird movie. its pretty weak to include aim and then not do a live action MODOK also.
