I’m not giving it a thumbs up or down yet. It doesn’t help that I saw it in two settings over two nights where I was pretty tired each time. Right now I’m inclined it leave it with a giant “Wut?” as my opinion of it, and move on.
Just watched Enders Game. It was good but honestly 2hrs was not even close enough to getting the whole movie across imo. I mean what happened to the good ol’ days when they’d produce 4hr movies and have a intermission half way through? I wish they would’ve either done that or put it in parts.
Cloud Atlas was literally one of my favorite movies. The depth and creativity was bad ass!!
I agree with elevenbravo on Ender’s Game. I saw it last night, and while I really liked it - great casting and acting, very distinct, impressive visuals - it really was too short. I would not have minded a Peter Jackson length film. It felt too rushed, none of the parts of his training got fleshed out enough.
I really want to read the book again now. Were any of the other books worth it? I seem to remember them all being kinda strange political books that were nothing like Ender’s game.
2 Guns.
It was actually pretty damn good. I loved the little hints of lulz during certain scenes. They were there, but it was no “in-your-face” humor.
Thor: The Dark World.
Nice effects, some funny parts. Could have used more plot / character development / background stuff in Asgard.
Ender’s Game doesn’t start here until the 5th of December.
Does the movie retain the big twist from the later parts of the book, or is that information revealed from the start? (probably best to avoid spoilers for those who haven’t read / seen it)
I’ve heard that the Ender’s Game movie has a very rushed feeling, like they tried to do too much in too short of time, the beginning scenes were REALLY rushed. I haven’t read the book so I don’t know about the twist.
Yes, it does feel rushed, and could have easily filled out another hour or two, but as I said before I think it makes up for it with good casting/acting and a nice visual style. The main plot twist is there. I asked my friend who hadn’t read the book if he could see it coming in the movie - I thought the movie was kind of making it obvious what the twist was. But he said he didn’t notice it, so at least some people will not know it’s coming until it is revealed near the very end.
I’ve not read the book, but looking at the synopsis on Wikipedia it seems like the advertising pretty much gives away the twist already.
“But it’s all just a game. Right?” - Actually on the back cover of a copy of the book a classmate was reading.
That’s stupid. I mean I know the book is old and all but this might be someone’s introduction to the book. How can you go and spoil it with such an obvious hint at the twist?
Oh, that twist? I haven’t read the book and even I know about that one.
If that’s a major plot twist, why is it on the back of the book?
Nothing like that on my 1990 print of the book: https://i.imgur.com/D1ShUCO.jpg
(defective print that it was - gets to the end of chapter 2 or so and the book literally starts over from the beginning. Some of the later chapters are messed up as well)
Could be that ads for recent prints just assume people have already read the book / had it spoiled for them
Right, so like I said, it really does feel like if they had the proper time (IE 2x 4hr movies) it could have been legendary. As someone who read the book I feel that I easily related to the characters and had a good feel for all the missing time.
But one of my friends who had not read the books said he enjoyed the movie but claimed that he felt that there was some serious lack of content.
This was a much newer copy, with “now a major motion picture” and a cover from a still of the movie.
The Heat. Shitty Sandra Bullock movie. Worst movie I have seen in years.
Despicable Me 2. Would have been hilarious if I hadn’t watched so many previews of it… It was still very entertaining. It also didn’t help that I started watching it at 3:00 am while not being able to sleep in my Vegas hotel…
Turbo. Much more entertaining than The Heat. Not nearly as good as Despicable Me 2.
The Princess Bride.
This is probably one of very few movies that are as good as, if not not better than than, the book it’s based on. (If you haven’t read the princess bride book, by the way, I would actually recommend it. It’s got a really clever framing device, among other things.)
Thor 2. Was into it.
If I could work my will on that movie, I would remove the scenes with the grandfather and sick grandson. I could, using my editing prowess and access to the movie’s soundtrack, remove all references to them two. I have nothing against Fred Savage or Peter Falk, but in my opinion, they completely halted the flow of the story and took me out of it.
The book’s framing device is kinda similar; basically it’s pretended to be a very long, dry political satire which the author has cut down to the “good bits”. I haven’t read it recently enough to remember how invasive it was, though.
But the whole point of the frame narrative is to indulge in meta-humor at the expense of fantasy stories! Hell, that’s the point of the movie! I loved those bits.
