Ketchup is a term to describe a viarty of diffrent condiments back in victorian times there was lots of diffrent kinds of ketchup in those days mushroom ketchup was the most popular, since then the others have mostly faded out just leaving the tomato ketchup.
In my house we do refer to ketchup as tomato sauce.
although really a proper tomato sauce would be more like a Italain pasata I rekon.
