I do listen to your soundtrack everyday if that makes you happy
Awesome. I really loved how the soundtrack meshed with the game. Others might disagree though.
The soundtrack was the most surprising part of BM for me.
Even the songs I didn’t like have grown on me, sans Blast Pit 3.
Inbound part 1 and Anomalous Materials both sounded like they were straight out of Half-Life, Inbound is my favorite ambient piece, and I actually like the AM suit song in BM better then the original suit song (please don’t hate me)
Though I still love Bailey of course, I feel you did a damn good job, illustrated by the fact that I want to keep most of your songs in the game
Yeah definitely. Inbound was just great. I didn’t think much about that track when it was released 2 weeks before the game, but when I fired up the game for the first time and heard it, the music REALLY made the moment shine.
i love your soundtrack, even if some arent fitting
If I had to choose just one, it’s Blast Pit 3
Forced into music, eh? No wonder you’re so damn great at it. I actually usually have the Black Mesa Soundtrack looping in the background while I’m at the computer. Outside of the game it’s extremely great music, but inside everything changes for the better.
I too loved the soundtrack, especially Inbound (I actually cried abit, happy tears, during Inbound due to the musics ambience effect ), the tripmine room, and the HECU ambush in Questionable Ethics. The only track I felt was out of place was the one that plays after you kill the Tentacles.
You guys dont’ think Blast Pit 3 fits?
Can I ask how you played this section?
I think it fits, but if you play through it too slowly the timing can be off, taking the effect away. The more sensitive tentacle AI doesn’t help.
Well, I didn’t understand perfectly how to bypass the tentacles, and the jump mechanics didn’t help. So the music didn’t synchronize too well with the action. It would have been better when you are totally sure that you defeated the tentacle.
And a thing…the music is perfect, but it’s too loud. I think it affects the quality of the sound. Like in the loudness war.
Your soundtrack rocks, Joel. You are amazing. I hear the music frequently, specially the action-y ones like the one from We’ve got hostiles or the first one of Surface Tension.
Edit: Fuck, I missread your name. I´m so retarded, T_T
:hmph:
Gotcha, thanks for the feedback guys. I’ll talk it over with the other devs and see if we can make the final climb up more in-line with the pacing of the music.
As I have already mentioned, I love the track (Blast Pit 3) but it’s better to imagine Gordon heroically defeating the tentacles, something else is actually accomplishing this as getting back is kind of depressing
This track worked great for me and was synchronized perfectly, but I guess it’s different for everyone.
And for those who say that music is too loud - you can always lower the volume in the settings, it’s easy
I noticed the higher I had my headphones, the more equalized the music seemed with the game… Though that’s probably just my idiocy…
Now that I think about it, Unforeseen Consequences actually didn’t fit with that lift. Funnily enough it’s actually my favorite track in the entire game but the style seemed a tad off for that section. Can’t put my finger on it.
Your music is awesome, but sometime is too loud.
Devs should fix this issue.
/about the interview
I Look forward to listen your first Valve game soundtrack
Man, if you ever get a job offer from Valve, just take it ! Kelly Bailey had his face put on Gordon Freeman’s head. Your face might just be the face of the next main Valve character.
By the way, the soundtrack is excellent, and you don’t have to worry about people not liking it as a whole.
The thing is, when you hear good pieces of music in a game, you will always like the original version more than any other remix that follows.
In your case, Black Mesa is an original game in itself, with a different atmosphere from Half-Life, therefore your songs will be the originals and will always be worshiped.
Can you tell us if you are taking your soundtrack in a different direction for the Xen expansion ? Or are you sticking to similar beats to those found in the Earth chapters ?
Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
