Incredibly minor gripe thread

There have been lots of threads with people complaining about Black Mesa’s big problems (balance issues, bugs, etc.), but I haven’t seen much in the way of small complaints.

So I ask, what are the little things in BM that bugged you? It can be as small and insignificant as you like.

Personally, I don’t like how Gordon lowers his gun while sprinting (with always run off). In most games, the player character lowers his gun so the player will know that shooting while sprinting is not an option. But in BM, you can shoot while sprinting, so it’s totally pointless. It looks really silly when you’re sprinting and you have your gun lowered, but then you fire it and it just pops right up for a moment. I kind of hope there’s a way to disable this, because it sort of bugs me.

Funny how lots of people complained you won’t be lowering your gun while you sprinting, they do it, and then this is here. You just cannot please everyone, lol

I guess I kinda dislike that the regular walk button doesn’t function at all. It’s irrelevant that there’s s hackish fix.

Why can’t people be happy with what they have ? Seriously, it’s mod made to appeal to a lot of HL players and everyone has different taste/opinion and won’t be completely satisfied.

I think I’m gonna turn this thread around : Incredibly awesome features thread

Well, there are menu options for enabling/disabling minor features. Why can’t weapon lowering be an option? Being able to switch small features like this on and off is what the BM options menu is for.

And who said I wasn’t happy with the mod? Like I said, this thread is for really minor complaints that don’t really ruin the game, but are still potentially bothersome in some small way.

Well I’ve seen a good couple of your posts where you grouch about different aspects of the game (crowbar, weapon selection and lowering) so from an outside look, I see you’re not very satisfied with the end product :stuck_out_tongue:

I actually like weapon lowering feature when sprinting… it made itself clear you were sprinting and could not aim while doing so… Solid mechanic there nothing wrong

Señor Unit24

Have you tried to run with a weapon in your hands? Was it possible for you to run and hold weapon perfectly upfront and ready for opening fire?

My one minor gripe is that you can’t turn off the radiation noise, just once I’d like to be able to appreciate the toxic levels without the noise covering up all the fine detail.

I think the fact that I’m complaining about minor things rather than big things should already say enough about my overall opinion on the mod. I love Black Mesa. The level design and art direction are fantastic, the sound is great, the voice acting is much better than I expected, and it’s faithful to the original but still not afraid to change things here and there. When there are so many good qualities, the bits that I don’t like stick out even more, so I point them out. I mostly just talk about small things because I don’t see anyone else bringing them up, and I also wanted to know if anyone else had minor gripes that weren’t really thread-worthy, hence why I made this thread.

You’re right, it makes much more sense to lower your gun while running, then have the gun suddenly teleport into ready position when it fires.

This isn’t a “realism” gripe, it’s more of an issue with visual flow. And I don’t see why you need another indication that you’re sprinting, other than the fact that you’re moving faster.

Whoops, should have edited that last post.

Do want. What’s incredibly awesome is how it features Black Mesa instead of that awkward European place. Great stuff. Also the chromatic aberration was pretty sweet.

Maybe it’s because they’re so insignificant to anything that no one cares to bring them up.

Irony.

Half-Life’s a fast-paced game, no time.

And if you really need to get a shot up you can easily raise a gun up to aim in under half a second.

Just because they’re not game breaking doesn’t mean they’re not worth mentioning.

How is what I said ironic? I meant that there are some complaints that couldn’t be big enough for their own individual threads.

That still doesn’t really explain the need for a weapon lowering animation. Half-Life 2 didn’t need one, I don’t really see why BM needs one.

I still stand by what I said about how it should be a toggleable option. It feels like an extra, unnecessary detail that, in my personal opinion, doesn’t really work.

:retard:

Are you actually trying to make a point, or are you just disagreeing with me for the sake of it? Because you’re pretty much saying nothing with this post.

I said that the feature doesn’t really work and isn’t needed, and it would be nice if it was something that could be toggled in the menu. What is there not to get about that?

Those boxes and the commands don’t work, not for me anyway

Is it a cvar? Maybe you can change it manually with the console.

The feature works perfectly fine. So what if it’s not “needed.” The fact that you can sprint at all isn’t needed (do away with that pesky sprint key with always run!), but it’s a nice feature.

I actually like the gun lowering because it makes me feel like I’m sprinting, and not just a floating camera that is now moving faster.

On the topic of incredibly minor gripes, I miss how in HL1 the Xen jump pads would gradually push you up, in BM they work like Q1 wind tunnels/Q3 jump pads. Not a real problem though.

Actually, the ability to sprint kind of is needed. Like you said, Half-Life does have fast paced gameplay, and running at top speed by default is an outdated relic of old shooters. Although there is a menu option toggling that for people who do like that sort of thing, which is why I said blah blah blah blah yeah you know where I’m going with this. I’ve pretty much stated my whole point by now.

When I said the feature doesn’t “work”, I don’t mean it doesn’t function. It functions fine. It just doesn’t feel like it serves any real purpose, other than to possibly mislead people into thinking that you can’t shoot while running. There’s just no reason for it to be there, and adding things for no reason isn’t exactly a great practice.

Yeah okay, I can sort of see this being a reason for some people, but it still feels weird when the gun just instantly pops up into ready position again when you shoot. Personally, I think having the camera bob a bit faster is enough to make it feel like a sprint, but that’s just me. Really, the only thing I want is visual consistency.

It’s a visual signifier that you’re now sprinting.

So what’s wrong with always running? I don’t see how it’s “outdated” or how that plays a role in anything. It doesn’t have any fallbacks, only the fact that you don’t have to hold a button to run full speed.

What do you mean by “visual consistency?” The gun pops up quickly, but that’s to be expected. Then people would complain about how it takes too long to be able to shoot after sprinting because Half-Life is supposed to be fast-paced.

I don’t like that the security guard that’s supposed to help you until you get your crowbar can die. I mean, that bit in itself isn’t really bugging, but the fact that he drops his gun is. The crowbar and Glock placements were moved further back to make Unforeseen Consequences more difficult, but if the guard stands too close to a zombie, he can be choked out and you can have your first weapon be a pistol. C’mon.

I find it a bit inconsistent that noise doesn’t always factor into things. You can bash crates around the corner from a marine and he won’t have a clue anything’s going on.

“I heard something … it sounded like a guy in an orange suit smashing a crate to bits with a crowbar and then shooting his pistol at my bros … sector secure, sir.” :stuck_out_tongue:

You know what really pisses me off?

On the tram at the start of the game you go past a section of the facility in which someone has blocked a door with a crate. This is a major health and safety issue and I am pretty disgusted that the devs included such a thing.

Also, some of the wiring in the BMF looks rather suspect. My brother is an electrician, so I’ll ask him if the overhead wires need to be better contained rather than just secured onto the wall.

Also, there’s the part where there are people working on a rocket. Clearly they are not wearing the correct safety gear. No wonder there was a huge accident in the facility when people show such a blatant disregard for safety procedures.
