How far has development progressed on Xen?

Will Black Mesa Source be released fully on Steam this year? How far along are you? Gonarch, Nihilanth? Gman? Can’t wait!

Thanks,
wws

You’re not going to get any answers. The team has always taken a “When it’s done” approach since the 2009 release fiasco. They’ll release information when they have something important to announce.

It’s also laughable that you assume work on areas is done in the same order as they appear in-game.

If that’s true, that is not a good business model. They should whet our appetites every once in a while just to keep us interested. People move on if months go buy without a peep.

Well, they’re not a business.

If they have something to “wet your appetite” with, they’ll do so when they’re ready. The people that want it will still buy the game or download the mod when it’s released. This has been their style for years, you might wanna get used to it.

it took 8 years for the team to release what they did, and taking the statement that Xen will be as big as another game, you can safely assume another 8 years, so sometime around September 2020 will be the release window

Also, if you lurk in the forums and subscribe to their Facebook feed, you can find the devs dropping morsels of info now and again - like the threads in the developer updates section of the forum.

I don’t buy this. First of all, I doubt most of the devs want to work on this for another 6-8 years, also, work was done on Xen as work was done on the rest of Black Mesa. Wasn’t there a statement around the time of the first release that it was a then recently-made decision to polish the earth portion and ship Xen later?

I’d say closer to 2 years, maybe 3, possibly less.

I really hope it’s sooner rather than later. There’s been a shortage of new HL content these days.

I’m pretty sure it’s been like this for quite a while. I remember occasioanlly a quote would slip into the wild and people would lose their minds.

It’s pretty much part of their ways and a tradition to not say anything at all about Xen and release dates, at least until they know for sure that they can talk about it and it sticks.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
