"Host_Error: Mod_LoadMarksurfaces: bad surface number"

Hello, I’m having this error "

Host_Error: Mod_LoadMarksurfaces: bad surface number" when I load the map c1_a4b at the end of c1_a4a in the elevator.

The issue happens every time and I don’t know what I could do.

Adittionally, after that error, the UI get’s bugged and I cannot load any other save unless I exit and reload the game.
Any ideas?

Come on!! I cannot continue playing!

Try restarting both the game and your system (computer) and see what happens.

I did that already, normally I would run a “verify cache” thingy but I don’t see how I could do that.

Use the “verify cache thingy” on “Source SDK Base 2007”, not “Black Mesa”.

Should be located in the “Tools (??)” section from the dropdown menu, inside the Steam Library.

I did that, I still get the error on the console

After looking at this source code from one of the ID Tech Engines (line 773-792), it appears that the engine tries to load models, which have a higher surface count than specified or expected and thus it fails?!

I could be absolutely and entirely wrong with that assumption, so if anyone knows what exactly this section of the code does / what it stands for, please reply below.

Back to suggesting things:

Try making a backup of your SAVE folder, then deleting the BMS folder and re-installing the game afterwards.

Don’t forget to copy & paste the SAVE folder back inside, once the installation is complete.

Without diving deep into details you’re pretty close to the truth.
This error usually means either a corrupted game data file or a bug in the engine somewhere resulting in memory corruption or a hardware malfunction.

As the error reported to be persisting and the same each time for the same map the first thing I would advice is to reinstall the game (but keep savegames) with the mandatory step of verifying the integrity of the BlackMesa.7z archive using 7zip File Manager tool from the official 7-zip.org windows package.

OK I did that and it fixed the problem temporariliy.

For a few levels it was ok, sometimes It came back and I did that procedure, to keep going.

However I’ve reached the end of bm_c2a3b and when it loads bm_c2a3c it give me "
Host_Error: Mod_LoadMarksurfaces: bad surface number" again.

I’ve reinstalled again, and did all, still get the error.

The only thing that’s left it’s to redownload the game and try from a clean install from there.

Any other ideas on how I can fix this?¿

Well, if I were you I’d created a list of checksums of all the files inside BMS folder right after extracting the game from the installation archive and as soon as the problem would show up again - proceed with making the same list once again and then checking that all files are left intact. If not - I’d be worried about either failing HDD, failing RAM and/or CPU (possibly due to them being overclocked - if they are) or some kind of malware corrupting the files as they are used by the game.

What else you could do is to extract the BlackMesa.7z contents to some other spare folder on your harddrive and then use “Advanced compare…” function of the “Far Manager” file manager to check this spare copy against your actual BM install and spot corrupted files, if any.

All in all, if your problems is really a corruption happening to the game files due to some unknown (yet) reason - it’s an EXTREMELY MAJOR THING TO WORRY ABOUT: it’s not just a problem with playing some game, it’s data on your storage system getting corrupt when it shouldn’t.

Hello, which program do I need to do that? I have windows XP BTW.

Also, I’ve reinstalled the game again, and now it doesn’t load. It says “Failed to create Character System”, whatever that means.

It’s another error I’m afraid

Bump, need a reply please.

No other thoughts? =(

Bump, still having the issue.

Hey you, did you check out your registry?

Ok. Go to your execute command in your start menu. Click on it.

Put ‘‘regedit’’ in the ‘‘Open’’ Execute dialog.

After that, Check HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Click on the arrow.

Click on SOFTWARE. Do the same.

You will see ‘‘VALVE’’. Click. You should see ‘‘Source Mods and C:’’. Erase them (It will reset your mod settings) and quit regedit.

If that don’t work, you better re-upload the Black Mesa Mod on the site here.

You should download it into torrent (It’s safer and less chance to be corrupted). Hope these tips will help.

Tell me what your specs are…

Please. :expressionless:

Well if it helps; I have an AMD Athlon X2 (Dual core) OC at 2,9 Ghz (3 or 4 years old).
3 GB RAM DDR2

Nvidia GTS 450
A partitioned HDD (20 GB for OS, 50 GB for the rest); and where I load the game, a external flash HDD samsung S2 of 500 GB (Where I have all the games and stuff), 1 year of use or so (But permanently being used)

I’ll try what you say

Have you tried running BMS through the actual HDD and not the external one? It might need some work since you probably have Steam installed on your Flash HDD, but it’s worth a try. (you can also have two Steam if you want to, just copy your Steam.exe to a new folder of your actual HDD and let it re-DL itself)
