HL2 crashes to desktop upon starting map c2a5 surface tension

I don’t understand this at all haven’t had one hiccup with the game up until this point. very frustrated. everything is up to date. maybe my map file is corrupted?? I have an ASUS G72GX laptop https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G72Gx/#specifications

ermagherd help

Could be a lot of things really.
Had you had any error messages produced in the installer log when been installing the game? Had you tried reinstaling it keeping your saved folder intact? Be sure to use 7zip File Manager from 7-zip official package to check the integrity of the BlackMesa.7z before proceeding with reinstall. Before trying to reinstall you could try to change your gfx settings and check if that helps.
Set HDR to None, turn off motion blur, turn off bloom, set shadows details to medium or low, set models to medium or low, e.t.c.

And I assume you have the latest version of the GPU and sound card drivers installed on your system, do you? Make sure your GPU driver is at least 301.42, there were reports by other GeForce mobile GPU users concerning BM crashes due to outdated nVIDIA drivers.

yea i’ll try reinstalling. everything is up to date. let you know the outcome tomorrow

For me that was the worst map in the game for performance.
It has a heavy smoke fog bundled with a Gargantua which you must run from.

You’ll be lucky to get 10 fps with all low settings on relatively high end system.

“r_drawparticles 0”, “r_dynamic 0” and “r_dynamiclighting 0” - and there you go. Don’t forget to turn these back on after you finish this area.
It’s a workaround really but it would do until the problem would be resolved (hopefully) by the devteam.
