HL: overrated or not, aka. HL3 the savior or a failure?

Tbh, I think if hl2 went the same route as the beta, it would had been as good, if not better, than the original. The original hl2 story seemed alot better and had alot more different environments. I like the conscript idea alot more too.

I think the original story was originally to be 50+ hours as well. But, that’s history. No use hoping for that now.

the original Half Life 2 story was clusterfucked to hell, but I kinda do agree that the repressive environments were better

The original version also had the player sit through a slideshow to explain what was going on. I much prefer the retail HL2 allowing the player to look around Eli’s lab for points of interest and snippets of backstory.

I feel like I’ve read that exact post a while back

The beta story doesn’t matter much to me, but the art directions and aesthetics of the beta I absolutely loved. They probably could have adapted HL2’s environments to a darker, beta-like atmosphere without too much effort, considering how dark the actual story is already.

Everyone loves the beta, but I do think it’s too cliché, I prefer the brighter universe of the retail

I’m really hoping that we’ll get to visit the Weather Control / Air Exchange in EP3.

I mean, they’ve already resurrected the antlion caves, the C17 underground, and even the Borealis. It would hardly be out of place.

Needs to make sense within the universe,
Right now, it doesn’t

Well, how many times in the HL series has it rained so far? Has it been windy, or even particularly cloudy? No.

Clearly a Combine weather machine is to blame.

Nah, just that we didn’t stumble in rain yet, though that 2006 engine demostration has rain effects
The only thing unnatural that could be related is the drop in the sea level, though

I know, I was joking.

Also, IIRC Laidlaw actually said that the drop in sea levels was the result of a giant underwater “drain”.

Sorry, I kinda would like to see that aswell, I was kinda being what my name emplies that I am

One thing I love about Valve’s soruce games is the sense of atmosphere in the worlds. Rain would go a long way towards adding to that, so I hope to see some more weather effects in HL3

judging by what I’ve seen, half life 3 visuals are so advanced that the only machine capable of even DISPLAYING SCREENSHOTS OF IT it is the Steam Box

Yeah, and my Nokia 3310

the whole joke was that nobody has seen anything yet, hence “judging by what I’ve seen”

Well, if it helps any, I plan to have a AirEx-like structure in my much delayed HL2 mod. It won’t look the same, nor be in the same place, because it serves much different functions in my mod’s storyline.

I think maybe the reason I didn’t like HL2 (storywise) so much was because HL was more or less made with no room for a sequel (except sort of because of the “good” ending) and I guess HL2 was just a teensy bit too gimmicky.

Having thought about it more though, here’s my general summary, excluding OP4/BS:
HL1 was a nice classic with a great feel to it but Xen was shit.
HL2 was not as good, but hardly bad.
EP1 was not very good IMO.
EP2 was actually really good, bringing back most of what made HL1 so great.
But why are we making guesses about what HL3 will be like? We literally have no base.

Anyway, on the topic of potential bosses, I’d love to fight a mutated Breen, he wouldn’t need the same V.A. if he was to even make human noises at all. Something sort of like Resident Evil 4 mixed with a sort of Gargantua/Gonarch thing maybe?

Anyway, just my opinion, the whole thing.

Why does everyone seem convinced that there HAS to be a huge boss fight with Breen? Breen died in the teleporter explosion. Sure, there was the video about the “host body” but honestly, could Breen possibly have managed to pull that off during the explosion by himself?

The only way that’s possible (in my mind, anyway) is if there’s another organization in opposition to the G-Man’s goals, and if that organization has operatives with similar time-bending powers. A reveal on something like that can only be either really great or mind numbingly dumb and predictable.

So I vote that Breen is dead and should stay dead.

Plus Breen without Robert Culp is like pancakes without syrup

Has less calories?
