Hazard Course

It sounds like a lot of work for something no one will ever use tbh. Not to squash anyones dreams or anything, but mods are downloaded by people who already know how to play games, not by kids playing on their Fisher Price My First PC.

And no, that wasn’t a poke at Macs.

See quote below:

bscly: It’s not about learning how to do it all again. It’s purely for nostalgic purposes.

Every time I made a new game I always started with the hazard course so I support this nostalgia

Meh, I personally am not fussed about the Hazard Course as I never used it. I never knew it existed until BM said it had been cancelled. I coped fine without the Hazard course.

This does look friggin’ awesome.

I think that even if you don’t have the BM materials and such, you should try and finish it, and show it to the devs, or here, even, and it could possibly be integrated into the mod.

I’d love to know if any other mappers / artists / whomever is interested in this as a project, regardless of whether people wanted to wait for assets or to start with brainstorming and blocking out?

Also, I’m still going to continue to work on my map (all be it slowly) whether it’s used as a base or not for a proper project, and this is the show-off forum so a minor update to the HEV room - I’m currenly working on the next rooms (will post something soon):

Edit: Very early WIP:

Well, I’m definitely interested in this as a project… But I don’t know how I could be useful, all I do is basically ways of supporting recognition, such as trailers or posters, but for a small project, I don’t see how it could help.

I’d like to help out, too (yet another person with ZERO Source mapping skills). Textures maybe?
(oh, geez… just read through a texture tut a little bit and was thoroughly lost)
Welp, unless basic image files are usable to anyone, nevermind about me doing any sort of texture work…

Anything else I can possibly do to help, let me know.

Just one thing I’ve noticed, the HEV suit is on a small platform 50 feet above the floor of a HUGE round room. I don’t have any specific suggestions in mind, but the first thing I would do is go through every inch of the original hazard course and think of ways to have it make sense. A small platform way above the floor of a huge cylindrical room makes only slightly more sense than the bottomless box crushing room.

I would say this would be a great project to work on. This would fall under the “just because we can” category. I wouldn’t mind speed-running through a source-ified version of the Hazard Course. But yes, make it less nonsensical.

It looks good, but your training course seems more high-tech, as evidenced by the glass platform. The hazard course in HL was a very grimy, residue processing-esque area, which was clearly meant to be low-tech and durable, being mostly made out of concrete and rusty grating. It looked like it was a maintenance area that housed pipes, electrical systems, and sewers.

I don’t have any glass platforms! It’s still all in dev textures - my hazard course premis (baring in mind my screens are a improve hammer skillz project) is a really, really old and delapitated part of the facility based around a testing silo which was retro-fitted more recently when Xen exploration began as a way of training people in the HEV suit!

The big cylinder (my silo) is not intended to be bottomless - it’s just lacking in detail (as I’ve only been blocking it out). I may have a go at throwing some textures around to show you what I mean.

I’m glad there are is some interest in this sort of project!

Oh, okay. That makes sense. Once BM comes out, lots of visual tie-ins to Blast Pit would be great, plus some other random silo-y details. Coolant pipes and the like.

Exactly!! Blast-pit-y is actually quite close to what I want as a theme in my map!

I’ve had about half an hour this afternoon so I’ve started adding placeholder detail:

What if you forget the original Hazard Course, and turn it into a lesson-based prologue?

A bit like the first few levels of Blue Shift, but with a twist.

Gourdan arrives at the BMRF, where can run around freely in the main halls of the facility after checking in, having access to a number of obstacle courses, hazard suit demo room and a shooting range (mainly for the security guards, but open for anyone who wants to shoot targets, or whatever.

After he’s done, he can start moving towards the train-stations where he hops on the train that takes you to the first chapter of the actual game.

Gourdan? That’s a new one :stuck_out_tongue: Sounds like a good idea though.

Lol’d at Gourdan - no, I’m not changing my sig or avatar :stuck_out_tongue:
(geez, I need something better to do)
Actually, you’d think using regular HL2 textures would look ok at least for now - or is it a huge pain to switch textures later on?

Also, integrating it into the beginning of BM is a very interesting idea. However, to make it interesting for those who could care less about it would probably involve making too many changes that would deviate too far from the original.

If you kept your texture variety to a minimum it wouldn’t be too long a job to replace old with new (using the replace tool!), but not having had to do that before I could be missing something…

I’ve applied some HL2 textures to my map to see what it looks like, unfortunately it has resulted in showing how quickly / badly the lighting was thrown in - and that needs tweaking now :meh:!

Also if we want to discuss ideas for an actual hazard course project maybe another thread somewhere more appropriate than ‘show off’ is needed?

Needs the huge hole at the bottom.

I actually made like 1/3 of the Hazard course on Orange Box about a year ago, I still have it I may upload a video…

Personally I love the Hazard Course, just because it doesn’t necessarily make sense, doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun, I think it should definately be made. Would look awesome with some new tweaks and custom models/textures too!

EDIT

Part of me would be interested in doing the hazard course properly, however after seeing what “Bolteh” said, that could be quite a cool idea, draw inspiration from the hazard course, but build it into a functioning little “world” so it’s just a singleplayer level you start up, but can wander around talking to scientists, go to the “shooting range” or try the “obstacle course”.

has anyone played Sin? As in the really old first game not sin episodes, as that had a big emphasis on training there were loads of things to do and you could even set best times for shooting galleries and obstacle courses, that could be a cool idea to try and intergrate, imagine a world wide leaderboard of everyone’s scores on the different sections!

Anyway, without getting carried away, I uploaded a video of what I did a year or so ago, I eventually lost motivation for the project and let it slide, and as I am not such a great mapper, I don’t think I’d like to take it back up again, but I think I may want to do the idea mentioned above, PM me if you’re interested and actually know something!! (no offense)
