Hazard Course Remake (AVAILABLE NOW!)

Yep. We either get someone to animate Gina or the mod dies. No big deal, you know…

So, anyone wanna help out?

Is it okay if i put this info in moddb.com comments?

Nobody’s stopping you.

Ah, the mythical animator-willing-to-waste-their-time-on-5-animations-for-a-training-chapter-mod. I study them the same I do Unicorns.

I’m barely an amateur when it comes to animating, but, maybe I could help at least tide things over for you guys?

Can you show some examples of what you can do?

I would like to see that too.

I have a few HL2 reskins up on GameBanana that I did animations for, namely this (which I just posted) and this (though I never did update that, it looks more like this now). Did some fiddling in SFM, but nothing really worth showing from there as they’re quite old, back when I could barely tell what I was doing from the low frame rates I got.

Mm, not quite sure that’s what we’re looking for. A few of us on the team already have that level of experience, it’s not been working out for us.

Great job you guys!

I just have a few questions though.

Will you update the Gina HEV suit to match the new one from the retail version? (Please do, new one looks much better)

This is the model you currently use, it is the female version of the old HEV suit.

Steam version looks much better and movement vise more realistic I think. (closer to HL2 as well)

Other question would be, some textures doesn’t seem to blend in all that well and some props look very out of place, will you fix that later?

I mean, look at that, floor texture and side of the stair doesn’t blend in at all, and it seems WAY too sharp. (like someone attacked it with a texture filter… and a chainsaw.)
Also, that holodeck (is it called holodeck? anyway.) looks just odd. Like it doesn’t belong there at all. Also, those crates… how the heck did they get there? It just looks out of place.

We’ve been meaning to work more on that room for a while now. We have other priorities at the moment, though. For instance, getting Gina animated and making other rooms more screenshot worthy.

As for the holo prop, that was quite literally ripped straight from On A Rail. If you have major objections, we can replace it with something more fitting, if we have time.

“Screenshot worthy” is a really odd way to put “nearing completion,” especially considering it implies we plan on showing screens of them, which 90% of which we don’t.

And no, we’re not changing Gina. We already made the mistake of allowing an artist to make it without design restriction, it was already different from BM’s to begin with, and we don’t have time (and if we did, it wouldn’t be with our time) to redo it.

To be honest, we could actually afford to take more screenshots than we probably thought. A nice side-effect of the original “open-dev” policy is that most of the existing screenshots are mostly outdated, so we can probably re-use a lot of areas for future screenshots without having too much fear of running out of stuff to screenshot. So long as we don’t go overboard and release a slideshow of the Course.

Off the top of my head, some viable candidates that we can quite easily re-use for additional screenshots are:

  • Sprint Jump Room
  • Yellow Silo Room
  • Swing Bridge Room
  • Shooting Range
  • Post-Dark Canal (the last screenshot we made of this was back in orangemap stage)
  • And probably a lot more that I’m forgetting.

Thanks for your answer. Holo prob is not that terrible, it just looks a bit odd, looks too new, too bright. It doesn’t fit the room like other holo props. Maybe it would fit better if it was same color? I don’t know.

I understand how tedious things can get, but try to understand me as well, I love this game and I only want the best for it. You could at least retexture it to make it more aligned with the new one. That shouldn’t be too hard.

It’s not that it’s difficult, it’s that we have far better things to worry about at the moment. We’ve got objectives to triage, and right now, Gina’s aesthetics aren’t too high up. It’s something we can look into way later on, I suppose.

Thanks, thats all I wanted to hear. I am not saying it should be a priority. (though it would have been one if you were going to change the model, rigging the old model, then creating a new one could be counter productive.) But changing the texture should do it and you can do that whenever you have time for it. (Hey, you can even use the textures from Black Mesa HEV suit, I mean, why not?)

Because the UV map on our model is entirely different and the textures are not interchangeable.
