Half Life 3 vs Black Mesa

Do we even know if it’ll be Ep3 or HL3? I seem to remember them acknowledging the ‘failure’ of the episodic thing, and after all this time (Ep2 was 2007) I’d really prefer a full, proper game, not a measly episode :meh:

And if it’s to be HL3, then they’re probably waiting on the next-gen consoles (the specs and dev kits rather, not the actual console releases). Since it’ll surely be on them either simultaneously or ported soon after, having new consoles that are far closer to current PC tech will be a big boon to making it revolutionarily special like HL and HL2 were :freeman:

HL3 was never announced. Fans just started referring to it as that after Valve having said that they’re not going to do any more episodes. A lot of people have come to interpret that as meaning Episode 3 has been scrapped in favor of a full-length title, mostly because of the long development time. (& a fair deal of projecting their desires)

Personally I think HL3 is more likely than ep3 given the time that has passed since ep2’s release, which is around 5 years, in comparison roughly 6 years passed between HL1 and HL2. Here I do assume that Valve have been working on the next HL game in secret though.

Just because it’s been that many years since the previous game doesn’t mean it’s been in development for that much time. They even said in the The Final Hours of Portal 2 that for a few months everything was put on hiatus to work on game design experiments. For all we know EP3 could have gone through a longer hiatus, or even multiple of them at this point.

eh, if anything it might generate more interest in BM, it would be cool if Valve would throw some money around and help the dev team finish the mod. i know its highly unlikely it’s going to happen but hey a person can dream.

Episode 3 is the end of the current story arc, assuming they don’t end it on another cliffhanger like assholes, the wait for 4 will at least be bearable.

Valve would never do that unless they got something out of it financially, and it wouldn’t increase the speed of development. For that to happen I guess Valve would actually need to pay them salary so that they could quit their ordinary jobs to focus more on the development. But who would quit a job to get paid for a project that is seeing its finish line “soon-ish” and then end up unemployed?

tl;dr the current set-up works the best

valve would never do. Black Mesa team took the game, which they sell for money has improved and is going to give everything for free. for the valve is almost an insult. They promised to do in 2005, half-life source good and interesting, but turned out rubbish. Now they sell it. Now they sell it. therefore, they had Valve will not help.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
