Half Life 2 Beta vs. Half Life 2 Retail

Do you mean the OICW? Or the HMG? The HMG has a blue scope though I don’
t remember…

He means the XM29 OICW. Nobody misses the HMG.

Half-Life 2 had good animations and non-relativistic newtonian mechanics. Besides this it provided and combined a large variety of some of the best entertaining gameplay themes from ego shooters of that time.

Ego shooters? What were you expecting? Another Deus Ex?

Please…

To be truthful the original concept of half life 2 looks very good, i love the dark setting, BUT, it does not suit the game itself.

a mod like this would be nice, i like city like structures tall buildings, night time with nice hdr and lighting, really appeals to me.

one thing half life 2 lacked, in my opinion, its ashame we never ended up in a combine base? or something of the sort.

(not nova prospekt or the citadel, but i guess this leaves room for modders to be creative)

crawls out of my roach hole cautiously 9.9 But Ball, if everyone did that and assumed everything they could think of has already been talked about then there would BE no new threads period… Besides, how was he supposed to know? Aren’t you guys a little harsh towards us cockroaches?

The Half-Life 2 Beta had a more dark and menacing look and feel to it, I almost like it more. But I looked through a lot of the uncompiled maps and the E3 trailers, as well as Missing Information, and the story didn’t seem to come together as clear as the final Half-Life 2. The story didn’t make as much sense as the final game. I’m glad they revised it.

half-life 2 beta

I’m saying,that the hl2 beta/leak is A WASTE OF TIME.
(the concepts in the Raising The bar book are good though)

and some of the locales around C17 looked fucking awesome

and damn I wish they kept the moving trolleys from the early videos.
would have made a great rail sequence

at least the return of the Borealis as a chapter seems likely

Where is the first screen from?Missing Info?

No, it’s one of the early cut maps, “Skyscraper”
It was the precursor to the Combine Nexus

well it’s clear that Half-Life 1 was a 90s game and Half-Life 2 was a 2000s game.
Styles have changed a lot.

I did like some of the concepts present in the original version of HL2, particularly the Air Exchange. I hope we come across one of those kinds of Combine plants in Episode Three.

Things change for a reason. So the old concept had cooler and creepier designs, but it’s possible that overall Valve wasn’t satisfied with how those concepts meshed together. Most of the time, game designers come up with set-pieces that look cool on paper, but that don’t really add up to the general sense of the game, so they get scrapped.

That’s what happened with Half-Life 2 over the years it was in production. It was originally going to be a longer and darker game, but it’s very much possible that Valve decided that it was too long and some of the original concepts would just ruin the overall pace of the game, so they changed it into something more short-ish and not so dark.

I actually did research, I thought the reason this concept of the game was discarded was because someone hacked the Valve servers and got a copy of the leak and distributed it amongst the populace. Think of it from Valve’s point of view, would you continue working on a project you want to surprise the populace with on the final version if it got out? or would you start over making sure that it didn’t get out again? Personally I wouldn’t work on it if it’s been leaked to the point people can play it. If they can’t wait, I’ll let them keep their half finished game. Restart the project and take it in a different direction so when it finally does come out they won’t know how the story goes, how to solve the puzzles, ect.

:hmph:

That is completely and utterly untrue. Most of the leak content that people fixate over was last modified a year or two before the leak, and the leak also contains a lot of the finalized content in a much less polished form, which if the game were changed because of the leak wouldn’t make any sense for it to be in the leak.

Next time try doing more research.

It doesn’t make sense anyway. Why throw away some perfectly good content just to spite some hackers? If you decide it’d be better to change it anyway, then fair enough, but it seems a pretty poor reason to change it just for that.

the gist is, valve delayed the game shortly after the leak. and that is the reason of the rumour (let’s face it, it’s just a rumour) that they had to change most of the content because of it. the leak might have had some role in the changes of the original plan but most of it was purely for a storytelling and gameplay point of view.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
