That battle took place just after Stalin’s Great Purge, which pretty much cut the head offo f the army. About half of the officers, most of the high-ranking ones, were killed as Stalin wanted to make sure that no one with any sort of power could ever challenge him.
And back then, and no doubt still now, the Finnish army were very efficient and experienced.
EDIT: On top of all that, it was actually 250,000 vs 1,000,000, not 1,500,000. Wiki got it wrong.
