Got a Quick Suggestion? - Small suggestions that don't need their own thread

Haven’t seen that meme for a while. Welcome back, old meme. Welcome back.

The scientists should have more lines for giving morphine to the player- I know that they give it more freely, which is good, but more lines would be good too.

Is it possible to add some extra sound clips/small animations for soldiers and security guards that would show them saying prayers to assorted gods/deities, or possibly patting each other on the back/waving at each other if they’re close enough to each other and behind cover during combat?

That seems like it’d take about three days on the outside to add, and it’d put a lot more life into the game to see HECU Marines and BM Security officers crossing their hearts, or pumping their arm “Delta-Force Style” when signalling to other soldiers.

Oh, and look’it that. My first post wasn’t retarded. :meh:

A page or two late, but here you are, good sir, the original file from the LHC Sound web site:

HiggsJetHarmSig2.mp3

Enjoy!

edit: I just read up on how the sound is made. Basically, the reaction/decay, called a “jet”, tends to consist of a series of separate events, each one isolated. Each event is called a “cell”. Each cell has three values associated with it: How much energy was released in that cell, how much time had elapsed from the start of the decay before the cell formed (“distance”), and how far the cell diverged from the initial trajectory of the particle (“dR”). The following picture (from the LHC Sound web site) sums this up:

So, to create this sound, the so-called “harmonic signature”, they used certain criteria to compute a frequency from each cell, and then they played back a synthesized tone on each one of those frequencies, all at once. That’s what you’re listening to.

Of course, there are three different sounds in the audio file, each one about 20 seconds long. The three sounds correspond to three different ways of computing the frequency.

1: The dR value of each cell is interpreted as a frequency.

2: The “distance” of each cell (how much time has elapsed from the start of the reaction) determines the frequency, and then presumably the amplitude is modulated by the intensity.

3: The intensity of each cell determines its frequency. Thus in the third sound, what you hear is a map of the energy levels across all cells collected. This is useful because cells, I believe, correspond to particular types of subatomic particles decaying, and each type will always release a specific amount of energy. Thus, this set of tones tells you what the component parts of the initial particle were, or something.

The other thing to keep in mind is that this data, and thus the resulting sound, is based on simulations they’ve run, and not actual collected data. It’s in theory what a Higgs Boson decay sounds like.

That’s my understanding of it, anyway. The LHC Sound explanation seems to assume some prior knowledge of theoretical physics and particle mechanics.

I bet Raminator can tell us more.

I didn’t think logical thought existed on the Internet anymore…

In Apprehension, those barrels were locked down when the area flooded. In Half-Life 2’s floaty-ramp-puzzle, you had no way of knowing this but those barrels were actually 90% full of heavy water.

So how come you can pick 'em up? Heavy water is heavy.

Tiki has a sixth sense with the world of Half Life.

Because Gordon levitates things with his mind and so doesn’t care how heavy anything is.

He can hop around with a CRT monitor like it’s nothing but a small cardboard box! :meh:

He can also fly on paint cans and crates!

So did I! I was actively perusing the forums when he posted it.

Well, I… erm… BAGSY!

Can we have the ability to crowbar a weapon from somebody’s hand?
I’d really love to render somebody’s efforts against me uneffective by taking away their gun.
(YES I KNOW IT’S A BAD IDEA BECAUSE IT’S NOT HALF-LIFEY)

Then why suggest it in the first place.

So that maybe somebody would’ve agreed that shooting or crowbaring a weapon out of somebody’s hand would be effective? I mean if the enemy is about to shoot at you with a shotgun and all you have is a crowbar and a glock with a few bullets, wouldn’t you want to shoot or crowbar the weapon out of the enemy’s hand?
If it’s not in the Half Life spirit, I would still like it to be in the game (even though it’s not a feature in any of the half life games whatsoever).

Well, for one I never run out of ammo completely.

And I was mainly getting at you saying it’s a bad idea.

besides, you probably can’t run out of ammo in HL if your left mouse button jams. :stuck_out_tongue:

[edit] wouldn’t know if it applies to BM though :frowning:

Or if you can’t aim. No wait, that makes you run out of ammo.

I just realized that my version of the game is heavily modified (it’s harder).
Never mind my suggestion.

You completely misunderstand the idea behind this mod.

That’s a pretty shitty idea right there.
