Got a Quick Suggestion? - Small suggestions that don't need their own thread

Since we had all these threads about barnacles and people posting pictures of (IRL) barnacles, my suggestion is that environments which have in-game barnacles in them, also have immature minibarnacles encrusting the area around the big barnacles as if they will eventually grow into a massive colony. The minibarnacles wouldn’t have any effect on gameplay, just add some sweet, creepy atmosphere. I imagine there could be some Xen environments where there would be fucktons of growing barnacles on every surface. Barnacles.

that’s actually a neat idea. Really gives it an ''infestation" feel to it.

Sounds interesting. You mean just smaller versions of barnacles or shorter, flatter ones? It would be great to see that, if not in underground Black Mesa then definitely in some of the later levels where Xen fungus starts to take hold. You could see something like the Xen mould growing with lots of weird mouths in it. It might be an idea for the mouths to move slightly, as though they’re just breathing.

It’s good, mainly because it wouldn’t be a direct representation of a barnacle, and therefore wouldn’t make anyone go ‘you’ve taken too many liberties with Half-Life creatures’ and shit. It could just as easily be something else.

I don’t know about that. I think Valve would have done this with the barnacles in Half-Life 2 and its episodes if they wanted them to be like that. I don’t disagree that it would add to the barnacles depth as a creature, I just feel it would cause problems with the continuity of Half-Life 2 + episodes.

I like the idea while I doubt that it will make it in. And I could see Valve putting something like that in eventually, as they did with antlions.

I mean baby barnacles - just like the big ones, only no tongue.
Your idea of the little barnacles breathing, I like it. But I don’t know what you’re trying to say about baby barnacles taking too many liberties - but making a totally new barnacle design that could just as easily be a new creature isn’t?

@TheJavid, actually GABE NEWELL once said that he wished he could have added baby barnacles, but they didn’t have time to put it in the game. He would be psyched if it was in BM: s. Just FYI.

This is a great idea. They did it with Headcrabs and Antlions, so… Why not?

if they have no tongue , why would you even NOT ignore them?

No, that’s exactly what it won’t do. You could make barnacles that appear vague enough so that they wouldn’t look like them, but at the same time share similar qualities. If you can do that, they could be construed as barnacles but also they could be something completely different. I think this idea would only work on Xen though.

My point is that if you keep the original barnacle design and change its behaviour, its AI, its habitat or change anything else too dramatically, then people can easily say that Black Mesa have ruined the barnacles and gone too far from what they were originally. However, if you alter the barnacle’s appearance so that they could just as easily be another creature, you’re sorted.

I’m thinking that these would be creatures without AI. They wouldn’t have tongues - they would just breathe - with the aperture of the mouths closing and opening. It could be a plant or it could be a baby barnacle.

A bit like underwater chimneys, except fatter, shorter, the colour of a barnacle and… less like penises.

What kind of problems of continuity ?
Since many HL1 creature disappeared in HL2 and episodics but are cannon, what’s the problem if adding larval/baby forms (and harmless) from those ennemies ?
80% of HL1 alien lifeforms vanished in HL2 who only expand the headcrab/zombie cast and bring the antlions for a change.
Now I call that a bigger problem of continuity.

Anyway, just my thoughts, this thing won’t make it anyway. Perhaps in an other mod…

Personally, I think the Combine probably wiped out pretty much all the Xen wildlife you see in HL1. It makes sense, as they wouldn’t want dangerous creatures running around, killing their slaves (that’s their job). The only reason the headcrabs and antlions are around is because they can be used as a biological weapon and kept back with thumpers, respectively. Also, they probably breed faster than much of the other wildlife.

That said, I do like the idea of baby barnacles, although they would have to be able to be passed off as something else in case Valve decides to write conflicting account of barnacle breeding.

Yeah, except the fact that Combine never were on Xen.

I’m pretty sure he meant Xen wildlife on earth.

we don’t see earth wildlife in hl2 on earth , and you want to see xen wildlive in hl1 remake ? [ on earth?]

crows much?

o wow , crows are like , so wild , they get drunk at parties and stuff , no really

if someone says WILDLIFE , the first thing that comes into your head is crows?

i doubtd we’re gonna se even crows in bms , i won’t even care

And pigeons. And seagulls.

Okay.

I’m pretty sure wildlife refers to animals as opposed to things that get drunk in your house.

I did. Obviously Xen is presumably alive and teeming.
