Well, maybe Magnusson asked (no, he rather told) a fellow scientist to look after his meal (just what you have graduated for), so he wasn’t present himself. On the other hand, Magnusson never stated it was HIS casserole. Maybe it belonged to another scientist and that one got so mad at Gordon that he kept on buggering his colleague Magnusson with this nonsense about a lost meal the whole day, so that Magnusson had a really, really hard time with this guy getting on his nerves. OR Gordon simply had been having this habit of ruining other people’s breakfast by playing with the microwave for so long that the scientist at the start of Half-Life is not the only one he pisses off with that. Many possibilities.

I don’t like the vent ear-ringing suggestion. Seems pointless, frivolous, unnecessary. There should be no punishment for using a gun in a vent, I’m sure the HEV suit at least comes with a set of ear-plugs for work-safety.
