Got a Quick Suggestion? - Small suggestions that don't need their own thread

RED, TEAM SCORES. NERVE, GAS, RELEASED. SECURE, PROTECTIVE, SUITS IMMEDIATELY!

Yeah but I agree the occasional human voice would certainly make it feel like a more lively facility, for when a microphone happens to be closer to a needy scientist than does a terminal request for broadcasting the VOX.

Like baconeggs said: It occured somewhere in 200X and the Combine over taking the Earth happened 20 years something later. So… Kleiner looks to be in his late 40s, early 50s - 20 years back to BMI he would be early 30s, late 20s. Even if that is some crazy 70s/80s hair-do, I have reason to believe that’s what he looked like during his time in Black Mesa.

What reason? You have no way of accurately telling how old that magazine cover is.

IF I SAY IT’S TRUE IT’S TRUE! :aah:

Watch, tomorrow the sun will come up. You’ll all see…

Sure there is. The typeface used on the “NEXT LEVEL OF QUANTUM” title is a typegraded version of SansCover, which wasn’t introduced until 1995, after people got all bored with Helvetica for their magazine titles. So at the very least, it’s after 1995.

EDIT: Actually, typegrading wasn’t really common practice until 1998 when things really took off on the grading front in general, because of Photoshop making it so damned easy. So, probably after 1998, as well, unless Popular Scientist was just way before its time.

Oh gawd, thank you Psyborg!

dude I’d rock that doo if I was allowed to have side burns.

what the hell are you on? He’s definitely older than 50 in HL2. And if he was in his late 20s at the time of the BMI that would mean that he’s almost the same age as Gordon, which is definitely not conducive to being a college professor.

Time for a suggestion: it’s entirely possible that I’ve posted this before, but it’s always bugged me that in Half-Life (and to a lesser extent in HL2) the laser on the rocket launcher gets really big when you shine it on a nearby surface, but really small when the incident surface is far away. Anyone who’s ever used a laser knows that the “dot” of the laser stays the same (small) size no matter what the distance to the incident surface is.

I realize that they probably put that in so that you could easily locate the dot, but I think that a compromise (constant size, but bigger) would be a better option. Not terribly important, but just one of those things that’s always bugged me.

I think that was an attempt to make the dot seem to lose brightness at longer distances, just like real lasers do.

I’m not sure if I’m following the point properly here, but the dot would be the same size. However the dot would look smaller when at a distance. Relative to the object you were hitting, the dot would be the same, but from a distance the dot would appear on the screen.
For example, the laser dot would look large on an Agrunt up close, taking up about the size of it’s face. When the Agrunt is a long ways away the dot would look smaller, however it would still take up about the size of the face because they would both look proportionally smaller.

Was it different than that in HL1? I can’t recall.

Haha, touche then.

Same. I hope it’s fixed.

I know what you mean, I’m saying that Valve made it smaller on distant objects to give the illusion that the dot has lost brightness since it is further away. This of course backfires when the dot is focussed on close up objects, but does the job for a video game.

Hey Guys.

Firstly let me get all the smarmy stuff out of the way as I am a new member.
I’m really looking forward to this project’s realisation and release.
It looks fantastic and I have been telling lots of people at my university who are really excited.
I love the music, which I think is so good that it has been added alongside the Orange Box Soundtrack in my music library (I copied it out of my Audiosurf folder).
The trailers are really well edited together and the models, textures and animations just look frankly stunning.
Right, now that I have suitably mollified/appeased/praised you all, the important stuff.

I was looking earlier today at the Health & HEV Stations and was thinking about the animation. I have played HL1 on both PC and my brother’s PS2 and always liked the health station animations https://img505.imageshack.us/i/dyhazard0000wc9.png/
and the multiplayer https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7c/Half-Life-_Decay_fighting_Vortigaunts.jpg mode in the PS2 version.
Although, as you can see from the images, the Health Stations consisted of a large and impractical needle, it did stick in my mind when replaying HL1 again on PC.

Right, now to the suggestions

HEV Stations:

Gordon reaches out for the plug with his left hand, then ‘plugs’ it into his side. I say his side, as the suit model has never shown anywhere on the front that indicates a plug socket, whilst the stations in HL2 are modeled on some form of wireless energy transfer for the Combine ie: technology far superior to the kind which is seen in HL1
The animation itself could consist of, as I briefly stated before:
Gordon reaches out for the plug with his left hand. The hand disappears off screen and the cord keeps extending then ‘locks’ into Gordon’s side.
Obviously this would have to work in a fashion that the player can only move a few steps away from the HEV Station in any given direction before the cord snaps back into place.

Health Stations:

As for the health station as have only one idea: that a tube extends from the socket in the lower left and slips into the suit. This is far more practical than a needle and allows for the same amount of movement previously mentioned.
Little is known of the workings of the HEV suit, other than such phrases as “Minor fracture detected” when falling.
One could theorise that could very well have some form of “Healing Gel Movement System” that moves the fluid from the Health Stations to damaged areas of the wearer’s body.

Everyone loves Ninjas

Whilst looking through the character models I discovered the female Ninjas. I loved the leg restraints on the female ninjas, I am guessing that they are the same kind as seen in Portal, or at least inspired by this.
It was a most gratifying inclusion.
It suggests to mein an abstract way, also possibly to other hardcore fans and übergeeks, that Aperture Laboratories had a hand in Black Mesa’s downfall.
Especially when you consider that the Ninjas will just disappear and reappear at seemingly at will.

Perhaps the ninjas actually used quick closing portals?
Either through the Portal animation and/or having a small portal gun attached to one either arm?

Everyone loves a little industrial espionage :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I hope this helps. Good luck with the rest of the project, I look forward to seeing it’s completion.
Thanks and if there is anyway to get involved I would be greatly interested. :freeman:

  1. There will be no hand animations whatsoever, including ones that operate HEV stations. These animations break the immersion of the game.

  2. The assasins (I believe that is the accpeted name for them) have the heel springs added to make their jumps seem realistic. While the same concept is seen in Portal, this does in no way mean that they are associated with Aperture Science. In fact, the team have decided to exclude any Aperture Science references from the mod.

Because of this it is unlikely that they will be utilizing any portal based technology. There is no justification to include this and it deviates heavily from the original.

As for their disappearing, they are extraordinarily fast and on hard difficulty they actually have cloaks, so it is likely we will see this in the mod.

The reason there isn’t a “plugging-in” animation for any of the chargers isn’t because it would break immersion, it’s because it’s very difficult to do. With all of the possible angles the player could be using it from, connecting hand to the player without looking awkward, and other such things, it’s just not worth the effort trying to make it work. Not saying that it won’t ever happen in a Half-Life game, just saying not to expect it any time soon.

Interesting fact: Suit chargers in HL2 can be used while standing 2 metres away.

O_o
That’s odd…

You’re right, but have you ever seen a laser with a meter-wide dot?

I’ve seen one much larger than that actually.
Also: Oh no! the black mesa forums mass dementia strikes again! :stuck_out_tongue:
I considered re-installing half life 1 taking screen shots and uploading them and linking them in here, but that’s a lot of work.

Yeah, I was lying. I know absolutely nothing about typesetting.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
