Gordon Freeman on the DS

thanks for the reply!

Read this!!!

Looks great, I might try to make a DS game if I had the software and it didn’t take so much effort.

Dare I say there’s very little point in your first game project being a DS game if you’re lazy and have no skill. DS games are hard to make! Try using Gamemaker to create a simple platformer on the PC!

Want some help with the graphics? I have a LOT of free time, it’s so much that i don’t know what to do with it ;D

you can call me kinda of a pixel artist, i’m good at drawing (not THAT good but enough) and if want some help just tell me, i know how to do that tile thing, but i’ve never made a game or anything like that…

so… call me

Looking good. cant wait to see the finished product.
THis is why he never speaks

Nice pic

and I agree with your quote totally:awesome:

Funny the things you can do in MSPaint in 2 minutes.

Heres a tiny update, so far im trying to work on creating monsters. College is starting soon so i’ll try my best to update as much as possible. :stuck_out_tongue:

Still looks good, and using a screenshot of the hallway in the second pic worked out pretty good. It will be pretty hard to finish the game if your going to college though…

Are you using tiles or just giant bitmaps for the background?
If you are using tiles, you should really look at the link I posted a while ago.
What tools are you using to construct this?

The main thing is to make the ground “path” that the character is walking on brighter than any other area, and then the further into the background objects get, the darker colors you can use.

This is actually getting pretty damn cool.

I think a large portion of your problems lie with this… the entire look of a 2D game is dependent on you being a pixel artist. I think you would benefit a lot into learning how to make pixel art and create low res textures and sprites…

I’ll be honest, I’m doubtful this project will go anywhere. Most projects like this die within weeks. Even in 2D this is a huge undertaking, far too much for one person alone… and even if you do finish it, not many people will ever experience this game. I’m sure the next generation of handheld consoles will be coming out soon anyway…

If you’re that serious about creating your own game maybe it’s worth you looking into creating your own thing from scratch rather than recreating a lesser version of a classic.

By comparison Black Mesa is bringing HL forward to current generation graphics and game design, whilst your project would essentially be taking HL backwards to 2D and the limitations of games from 20 years ago.

Disagree, it’s an awesome idea to remake HL in 2d, it’s marginally doable for one person as a platformer, and the DS homebrew scene is pretty big, HL  S would probably get a lot of attention.

On the other hand, you do need to be a pixel artist to make an old school platformer, and you have to know what you are doing to make a DS game.

I hope what I’m about to say won’t screw things up for you, but… How easy do you think it’ll be to get licensing and permission etc. from Valve for this idea? Having a good idea is one thing, but having a good idea that uses another things likeness, name, chracters, etc. is something else. It’ll be a bitch to even contact Valve let alone get permission to use the Half-Life universe as the setting for your game. I’d suggest making it a flash so legally your safe without licensing…

BTW, your "Gordon, looks kinda like Dr. Mario with glasses and a much smaller nose…

That’s looking really good.

Keep it up!

so, made any progress?

Obviously not since the last post of progress from him was in 2009.

cute :3

How would you put the game onto the DS? That is my question.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
