At the very end of the game, killing the scientist fails to trigger the “Failed to protect mission critical personnel” end game message. This preventing the script to go on and complete the final game sequence

I agree it’s totally stupid to kill him but… You know

Also at longjump module room all the scientist and the guard take an insane amount of bullets or explosive to get killed, but they do trigger the “failed to protect mission-critical personnel”

Mr. Freeman, do you always try to break everything around you? ))))

I posted this a while ago, myself. It’s not so much that it breaks the sequence as it doesn’t trigger a “Subject failed to utilise human resources” non-standard game over instance. It does this in the original Half-Life when you shoot that particular scientist (I know - I tried), as well as when you kill others that you need for retinal scanners or key pad locks. I don’t know for a fact that Black Mesa kept any of those since I never thought to check.

I don’t believe the game should be allowed to become unwinnable without kicking the player to the curb.

The fact is in the original Half life, you kind have to protect the scientist during the whole sequence, ennemies spawning fires at him and may kill him, then if I remember well, you’re a gameover or just restart the sequence I dont remember…

I dont see that happening in BMS, or it doesn’t happened to me, the scientist looks shielded in that shelf of his and doesn’t seem to take any shoots from ennemies.

Edit: I’m not sure and I dont have any late game saves for original HL, but I think there was some circumstances where the scientist would mumble something like “I’ve been interrupted” and just repeat the sequence from the beginning I dont know if it behave this way in BMS.

How about not shooting an important scientist?

Problem solved

Very productive answer, I’m just trying to help! If it’s that way why killing non critical scientists in the last chamber triggers the gameover and this very important final one dont.

Does it matter? Dont shoot the guy and you wont have any problems…

I dont even understand why shooting him would pop into your head

The scientists pre-cascade can also be killed without problems. Personally, I don’t consider the game to be finished. There are still plenty of flaws that need to be addressed and this is certainly one of them.

Why are you so hostile?

I just point out that killing him will broke the game. It’s not important how or why you kill him, it will just prevent you from finishing the game.

And if you read the thread, I said in my very first post that it’s stupid to kill him, but that’s just not the point.

While it’s being nonsense IMO to shoot the scientist there it is still a bug. The game should either display an immediate “Game over” message or should provide a means to “replace” that scientist (or simply make it impossible to kill him). People tend to do various stupid things in general, you know, Darwin awards is an excellent example of this unfortunate fact.

I’m not being hostile.

I just dont understand why anyone would shoot the one guy responsible for sending you to Xen.

That’s probably why the game doesn’t end. The developers probably didn’t expect anyone to even do that, and if you do simply reload.

The fact you mentioned it implies that you believe it should be fixed but its not a problem

Eh how is this a bug?

This thread is called “IN-GAME ISSUES”. Yes, it’s in a bug reporting section, but can you find any other thread where you can report stuff like this? Because I don’t, so why bitch about it? Or was he supposed to post it into News, Cafeteria, Help or Informative Archives?

It is a in-game issue, a game logic bug. Game is supposed to display “Failed to preserve human personal required for completing the mission” message or something like that - at least that is how it was working in original HL. In case BM devs decided to remove this functionality - it should be ensured that you can’t “stuck” in game without having a chance to finish it properly due to killing someone or failing to protect him/her from other hostile entities. As it is possible for now to get “stuck” in the state when you can’t finish the game in any way -it is a game logic bug that should be fixed by devs in one way or another.

And, once again, it’s no matter how stupid is to shoot scientist or to try to access some place you’re not generally expected to be accessing - the game shouldn’t assume anything about user behavior (just like any other software product) and prevent things like these from happening.

I’ve found a lot of glitches, doing stuff you aren’t supposed to do. One of the main points of bug hunting is to think outside box, and do things the devs would never think the players would do, because that’s when glitches and exploits happen, regardless of weather or not it is stupid/important. It’s the fact that this bug will make the game impossible to win.
