Game is too hard

Not sure if i posted this in the correct forum part,But anyway.

I feel Black Mesa is too hard, and im not the only one who thinks this if you take a look on google, there is quite alot of people mention this is too hard!

I had it on Medium difficulty…was hard,So selected Easy and it didn’t feel any different…zombie still hit you a lot and take too much damage from you,It does not feel like Half life 1 at all in terms of gameplay.
And im no noob to pc gaming or Fps in,I can kill people all day in a battlefield 4 and other similar games,But the enemy’s in Black Mesa…for me it takes away the fun…its frustrating.

Black Mesa looks absolutely stunning btw,you guys did a great job…what do you guys think about the difficulty in Black Mesa?

I personally feel that the difficulty is perfectly fine. I play on Hard difficulty and I find the game to be just challenging enough to be fun on that difficulty. If I want a relatively mindless playthrough, I usually play on Normal.

I also feel that this is a far different style of game from Battlefield, so it isn’t really appropriate to compare them.

I only mentioned Battlefield as i know some peoples reply are usually “get some skill” blablabla" because their rude like that…i know they’re not in anyway comparable but i only mention it because im not a noob at fps.

But why is it “easy” option feels no different from “medium” and the zombies always manage to hit you and take a lot of damage…something doesn’t feel right about black masa to me comiing from playing the orig HL1.

You keep using zombies as an example. I’m not sure about the range, or how the difficulty scaling is, but the raw damage of both of their attacks is exactly the same in both games. Likewise, the formula for killing them flawless is the exact same as it’s always been: move in, smack smack, back up, repeat till it’s dead. Even so, the difficultly has actually been modified a lot based on player feedback. It’s not really meant to be a 1:1 playstyle, otherwise it would get stale and be sorta pointless.

I personally think the difficulty is just fine as it is (barring the barnacles). Even back in the mod version a lot of it felt fine to me. The HECU used to be ridiculous back then, but it’s much better now. If anything, some enemies actually need to be buffed.

I think the Zombies feel a bit tougher because the Crowbar’s range is a smidge too short at the moment. I may have overnerfed that in response to it being way too long when we released EA.

The balance is a work in progress, it needs a bunch of tweaks here and there. CU3 will bring some nice AI updates, particularly to Agrunts, so things will keep getting better. Overall we’re pretty happy with the balance at the moment; it will never be perfect but we’ll keep tweaking and improving it.

And for what it’s worth, I generally found HL1 to be harder than Black Mesa, though both games are like second nature to me now!

Ive come here to say-set up your difficulty level to easy if medium or hard is hard for you. There are only few balance problems-Aliengrunts have too much hp and dmg(its a problem in Lambda Complex),ammo supplies for revolver\crossbow\tau\rpg\mp5 grenades should be drastically reduced due to their power and crowbar range should be buffed to being usefull vs zombies.

Not to be rude,But did you read my thread…i already said i changed it from Medium to easy and it felt no different. :frowning:

Guess i just wont play the game then,No point in playing a game thats frustrating getting hit every time no matter what method you take to avoid the zombie/whatever it is…swings.

You can always use the console to modify the damage levels if it bothers you that much. Pretty much every enemy/weapon has a damage setting you can change, though I’m not sure about range.

You can try verifying your game cache integrity via Steam (right click the game in the library, then properties). This makes sure nothing went wrong your game download and that you’re actually playing the same as the rest of us.

If you are playing the same game as the rest of us (which seems probable), then consider that since people generally do not feel Black Mesa is too hard, it might just take some time for you to learn the game mechanics and become better at it. You could post some examples of which parts you find especially difficult, so people can you give some tactical advice.

What more tactical advice could you need? I pretty much never get hit by zombies in Black Mesa. If the problem is that you don’t like getting hit period, maybe enable god mode and just enjoy the scenery.

Sorry,my fault.Follow this path-Steam\SteamApps\common\BlackMesa\bms\cfg.Then you should find Skill.cfg there, open it and you will see a lot of NPC stats and difficulty parameters so you can balance BlackMesa in your way.

If you’ve played through Half-Life 1, or any of the other HL games, I do not see how you could be challenged by Black Mesa (on Easy or Normal). I believe this is a case of practice makes perfect. If you disagree completely, then try tweaking the control settings to something you can react with more quickly, or increase or decrease the mouse sensitivity.

If you really don’t agree, then download Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and play for 20-30 hours. When you’re done, go back to Black Mesa and you’ll just laugh at how easy it is.

The game is perfect for me!

On easy it’s a walk in the park, just some moments where it’s the same on all difficulties (the creature in Blast Pit)

Even with carrying the hat till u reach the portal to Xen.

I personally find the combat to be very faithful to Half-Life Source, minus the lightning-fast grunts and certain choppy animations.
Is it just the zombies you’re finding to be too difficult? If so, then I’d say try to tough it out until you reach a part of the game with fewer zombies.

Interesting. Since the original release, many things were smoothed and balanced out in my opinion.
Playing the game on hard difficulty, and it is perfecltly hard-fine for me.

Last night I met the first ichthyosaur in the game, where we pick up the crossbow. The beast quickly finished me off as it should. (although there is a bug there, that as we fall into the water with the cage, we start with 0 oxygen underwater, which sucks).
In the original release, all it took was a few bullets from the pistol to kill it … that was lame.

In a nutshell, no, I dont’t think the game is hard. Although it’s true to say I am familiar with Half-Life since 1999.

How is this thread even still around.

This was a long time coming. Get gud.

Nostalgia has never felt so fresh - Expect tremendously detailed environments, old-school tough-as-nails combat, and a gripping story with memorable characters. [/size]

That being said, the game is still in EA and the devs have repeatedly stated that they are fine tuning the AI, ie… it’s a work in progress.

The steam release seemed less difficult than the mod version to me.

TextFamguy - You hit the nail on the head here, at least from my perspective. I’m sure we all have many practiced “muscle memory motions” for video games - duck-jump, bunny hopping, and in this example, the “move in, smack smack, move out” using the crowbar. The speed and or range of the zombies seems to exceed the walkspeed and crowbar range, so when I do that practiced motion (and I even spent some time toying with a zombie trying to get the distance right), I was still hit a high majority of the time.

Anyways, looking forward to updates as always, keep up the great work
