Game crashes whenever I activate the Big Fan

Well, as the title says, whenever I activate the big fan (which is one of the requirements to kill the tentacle monster) the game crashes and I get and error message saying "Hl2.exe has stopped working. Every time I tried I gpt the same error message and crash.

Is this a known issue and can it be solved or worked around?

Other than that, I really got to hand it you guys who did this in your spare time. Fantastic game so far. Love how the weapons handle and everything! Really brings me back to when I played hl1 back in the day

In my first game I crashed a few times as well. Twice where you are now. On my third try it worked though. Just keep trying

It happened to me too, but I can’t get it to work. It crashes everytime. Only area where it happens.

Windows 8
Intel i7 2600k
ATI Radeon HD 7970
16 GB RAM

Same for me…

I’m getting the same thing. When I activate the fan and climb the ladder, the game crashes shortly thereafter. I’ve tried several dozen times at this point.

Guess I’m stuck until a fix shows up.

Isn’t Windows 8 a beta OS?

Throw all the boxes nearby down the pit before activating the fan.

this is bullshit!!! can you fix this problem???

Thanks! That worked a treat. I also threw in all the barrels, canisters and pallets in the entire room beforehand just to be sure.

I had the same problem. Sounds incredible but, as blastedt said, destroying all the wooden boxes nearby and THEN activating the fan resolved the bug.

Don’t ask me why. I just know that it worked for me.

I couldn’t get it to work either so I tried to restart the chapter (newgame > select chapter) and then it worked without any crashes

the same thing happen to me i fixed it by making sure nothing fell down there before i turned the fan on
just my 2 cents haha

Maybe it’s your computer. Mind posting your specifications (e.g video card, processor, RAM, etc)?

I doubt that, since the problem has affected a wide variety of computers and, furthermore, can be resolved in-engine by removing physics objects. It would seem the bug has something to do with the airflow from the fan attempting to lift crates and/or pallets.

Removing the crates and pallets might be the most expedient way to resolve this bug. There are only a few such objects and none are necessary in the room.
