Free Games Thread

id3 = Quake 1, 2, and 3, so yes.
(and all the Call of Dutys)

I’d actually suggest Quake Live. But, True Combat:Elite is something I’ll give a shot at.

Area 51 was made freeware after it flopped, right?

The first episode of Doom is freeware.

The multiplayer for Halo PC as well.

McCAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN

I didn’t think the game was all that bad. Of course, I never bothered to play it until it was released for free.

The Spring Project, otherwise known of TA spring, modern engine originally recreating Total Annihilation (You can get XTA and other TA mods for free), mods expand it to make it an all-purpose freeware RTS engine basically. It’s pretty cool seeing TA in full 3D, and it has a first person mode too.

The first episode of Quake, as well as the first Episode of Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, etc. can be considered freeware, but they are really shareware.

90s game demos FTW. Even the Hexen 2 Demo (which is a great game btw) contains the first Hub of the game.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
Free WWII first person shooter.

Just been looking through the one of the Wikipedia lists and found something called Orbiter

Definitely going to give it a try.

Aren’t the first C&C games (1,2,RA) released as freewares?

Tech 3 is a few years newer than GLDSRC.

Nope.

He was close, i know at least cod1 and quake 3 use id tech 3.

Also yes they were nerd guy.

Well, CoD1 and United Offensive both were based on modified id Tech 3. All subsequent versions of IW’s engine were iterated from id Tech 3. There’s probably bits of code still left over in MW2’s IW 4.0.

As far as I know they are. C&C Tiberian Sun and Firestorm (which im playing through now) definitely are.

For some reason, links to the EA homepage are down for me ATM so I cant give a direct link to the download page.

The Powder Toy
Kind of a physics/chemistry-simulation, only much fun. It’ worth a look

Stranded & Stranded II
You are stranded on a lonely island and have to do the things Robinson Crusoe did, though there are no other humans(just some random beasts and walking food). You build and evolve. Kinda fun for a couple of hours.

Octodad
You’re father of a family of humans, only you are an octopus, meaning you have to move your tentacles with the mouse.(actually it doesn´t mean that, but you have to move tentacles with mouse anyway.)(and no, this doesn’t make sense) I found it rather boring.

Pfft.

Commander Keen = id 1
Wolf 3D = id 2
Doom 1/2 = id 3
Quake = id 4
Quake 2 = id 5
Quake 3 = id 6
etc.

So really Rage is on id tech 712384.

For those with iPhones or iPod touches:

Eliminate Pro

It reminds me of the original UT…just a shame it’s an iPhone app as trying to play an FPS on an iPhone is frustrating

Amercas Army, stick with 2 though 3 is buggy as fuck

That’s what you get when you fire the whole development studio on release day.

Simply because I can’t think of anything better, I’m going with Cave Story as best free game out there. Maybe just that I’m thinking of something with an intense storyline and ending.

But in terms of more generic titles, F2P has had a lot of impact. There’s QuakeLive, Battlefield Heroes, Vindictus, Combat Arms, etc. A lot of those suck, but you might find one that strikes a chord.

Red Eclipse

Yet another free and open-source “homage” to UT and Q3A that looks like it had Tron barfing all over it.

and it’s for linux too! awesome, testing it now.

DEATH RALLY!! by awesome Apogee!

God how awesome that was!

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
