Cross topic about the same problem, again 7xxx nVIDIA GPU:
https://forums.blackmesasource.com/showthread.php?p=498033
Try to downgrade drivers even more, maybe even to 1xx.xx branches of the driver. There was a time HL2 had been working OK with these GPUs so it’s just a matter of time and effort to find a driver release where the things got messed up.
P.S. Unless this bug only happen in fresher version of the Source engine. What about Half-Life: Lost Coast techdemo - how does flashlight perform in it on your system? Or in HL: Source - is it working ok there?
Hi!
When i wrote before i used the 301.xx driver, but checked nVidia’s page and installed 306.23. No more problem with light. My bad.
But now is an other problem… XD

Thanks for help!

In short: try downgrading your driver version through 2xx.xx and down to 1xx.xx series one version by one until you find what version would finally provide you with a bug-free shadows/flashlight experience. Report back your findings to this topic please. Thanks.
Hi!
I have good news.
I read downgrade the driver and googleed original driver for MSI NX7300GT-TD256EH.
Find this page ( https://www.nodevice.com/driver/NX7300GT-TD256EH/get51067.html ) and download the 168.16 driver.
After install not found shadow or flashlight bug.
Hi!
I found original driver for my card. On page recomended 168.16 driver. I’m installed this and no problem. (The setting is not interesting, all setting work well.)

PS: My card full id : MSI NX7300GT-TD256EH
Thanks for confirming out suspects concerning driver bug and reporting back a version that works correctly with the game. Have fun playing it!
You don’t even have to roll them back that far. I started with 275.33 and the bug went away. I think once you get into the 301.42 drivers is when it becomes a problem.

Confirmed. Downgrading to 275.33 fixed the issue here, running on NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT.
I went the other way and started to check from the latest drivers downward - everything started to work fine on 285.62 drivers from October 2011 which makes them almost year old. That’s funny that no one with 7xxx GF cards found out that flashlight was not working in Source Engine for that long
That’s probably because people with cards that old don’t bother updating the drivers very often.
I’ll test out the 285.62 sometime tomorrow, need to get some sleep.
Guys, thanks for continuing your investigations on this. It’s good to know the latest normally working version of the driver for 7xxx cards.
I can confirm that:
- The latest driver (306.23 - September 2012) fixes the flashlight problem, but creates a new problem where shadows are big black rectangles.
- The newest working driver I for me is 285.58 from October 2011
- All drivers downloaded from Nvidia’s drivers page
- Nvidia should reconsider its QA procedures or change its slogan to “New Driver, New Bug”.
I actually went an did a bug report on nvidia’s site if more people do it that might get them to fix the problem.
