Antlion Guards & Hunters kinda make them pointless.
Then maybe give them some super lightning ranged attack or something and decrease their health.
They’ll be like… lightning tanks. Except crabs.
Meh. Everything I’m saying here about them is pointless anyway.
Different roles for different assimilated species.
Striders: Heavy Tanks
Gunships: Close Air Support
Dropships: Air transport
Hunters: Elite infantry, comparable to SAS or SEALs
Overwatch troops probably act as expendable grunts for menial tasks such as guard duty, driving vehicles and apprehending some of the more well armed troublemakers. When placed into full on battles they probably act as more of an infantry wave designed to either overrun the enemy or waste all their ammunition, allowing the heavier units to push through. When looking at humans the Combine probably saw a fairly weak but numerous worker, who could be used for slave labour and occasionally given a gun and told to run at the enemy. In that sense I’d say that they parallel the Vortigaunts in the Nihilanth’s army. Making some kind of “Super Synth Soldier” would be a pointless waste of resources and would make humans redundant as fighters.
Touche:retard:
Couldn’t the combine elite count as a synth?
I mean, he’s only got the one fucking eye.
Impossible to say. You don’t know what’s behind that full-face helmet.
I always figured that the crabsynth would have some sort of super-long-range artillery barrage. It seems to be the one military role that the combine forces lack, barring the headcrab shells. As such, the crabsynth wouldn’t be something you’d fight directly so much as something you’d have to disable to let reinforcements approach.
I beg to differ.
Well the Transhuman Combine soldiers do seem to be competent and capable fighters… in story at least. I think there are a few places where they take down entire rebel outposts and stuff.
In-game, they’re weaker than Rebels and get slaughtered ridiculously easily for gameplay reasons, I’d assume.
I’d guess that story-wise, the transhuman soldiers are competent and versatile enough, or the Combine probably wouldn’t have even bothered with them and scrapped them all in favor of Hunters or something. Or it could’ve been because of Breen’s lobbying for Earth’s representation in the Union.
Yes, but as cliche as it would be, you’d think they’d have done some supersoldier that has the damage resistance of a small tank and could fuck shit up either with his hands, or with a heavy weapon (thinking something like Power Armoured soldiers from Fallout). Besides, regular Combine Soldier don’t seem to fit in as well with the rest of the Combine, being considerably weaker.
No wonder Breen has to beg for his race and give speeches telling the Soldiers they need to prove themselves worthy.
So I guess some buffed-up guy somewhere between a soldier and a strider?
It’s been about 20 years since the Combine takeover. Maybe they had some projects going in their labs or something.
Or maybe they were kept out of the game because otherwise it would be too difficult and/or not fun.
indeed. there were all sort super soldier types they experimented with but cut out, but they figured the Hunter did the job just fine in Ep2.
they look pretty modified
to be trully, the REAL combine race despise any other race and they look at them as a good target for enemy bullets and as a slave.
This is so much times shown in hl2 and episodes:
in the Helicopter chapter in hl2 you get inside a base full of metropolices send on a suicide mission to stop you while the helicopter shoots though the windows killing the 25% of the metrocops in the area. They were send to stop your movement and let the helicopter have an opportunitty OR to take your ammo down.
The combine soldiers ussually go on a ‘‘Run, shoot, kill in a straight line to the rebel bullets while the elites are coming to support them while the only 1s getting shot are the normal soldiers’’ Also they did this in ep2 while the hunters attacked you from back or a bigger distance.
Also the soldiers are just a lot of shields for better units, if you go in a zone without cover and there’s a hunter and a combine soldier, if ya shoot the hunter it will keep moving 'til he hits ya or the finds a ‘‘cover’’ wich is the combine soldier, they ussually put themselves in the back of the soldiers.

I like to think yes, they have other kind of emotions, if they wouldn’t have anything more than combat and fear emotions they would just be mind-less killing machines, and they know how to teamwork together so they have maybe removed their ‘‘jokes’’ and all but they still having other feelings
warned him
Combine isn’t a race. It’s a faction.
That would make sense since the other unused synth was the mortarsynth.
I dunno, even in-game a well placed grenade or shotgun blast can fuck up my rebel squads.
It’s called a Hunter :hmph:
The Overwatch work fine as a well armed garrison unit, they don’t need to be made into elite fighters.
From my opinion it seemed like Civil Protection were manning that base and Freeman rudely interruppted, causing a chopper to be called in.
Humans were still on the trial stage at the moment. Once they’d proven their effectiveness fully they’d probably feel more justified in creating a synth soldier.
Here I was thinking the soldiers were synth.
Overwatch soldiers are simply the best troops for indoor fighting. Simple as that. They’re small, don’t need any large open space for moving and have powerful weaponry.
