Wow, just reading this thread has made me so angry. I understand why some people don’t support the death penalty, and I don’t believe in any way that life in prison is less expensive then death row. None of you have ever watched shows where people who have murdered or raped others are let out of jail after a 5-10 year sentence, and they do the same again? These people had their chances in life, and they did terrible things for which they deserve to die. I remember watching an episode of Dateline NBC where they caught the same man trying to have sex with a 13 year old girl twice, once when he was on schedule for a court trial for the first incident. Some people may be innocent for what they’re accused, I feel terrible when I hear someone was executed and afterwards he/she was discovered to be innocent, but rapists, murderers, attempted killers, and people who are stupid enough to take some type of drug and get behind the wheel of a car and accidentally kill people, they deserve to die for their choices in life, I don’t want to be dragged down to Hell with them.
okay so let me explain this to you in words you might understand. you think people are terrible for deciding other people deserve to die and acting on it. so, you think those people you deemed as terrible deserve to die, and act upon it. doesn’t that make you just as terrible as them? then wouldn’t you deserve the same punishment?
eye for an eye leaves everyone blind, etc? do you really not see the logic in this? if ONE innocent person is executed, the system has FAILED. if a few murderers go free to keep hundreds or thousands of innocent people alive, THAT IS FINE WITH ME. do not kill everyone just because you THINK they’ve done something.

I am usually a lurker, and rarely post on this forum, but this issue is a very big deal to me. Fancypants, what is the value of a human life to you? Would you kill 1 murderer to save an innocent? I would on the spot. Without a moments doubt. How many would it be for you? How many terrible crimes and acts would he or she have to commit for you to rid the world of them? And you are quite obviously a terrible reader. I said, if someone is THAT FUCKING RETARDED to take drugs or alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a car, and they get into a crash and kill others, they deserve to die for their stupidity. also, why death penalty sucks:
A) the virtual certainty that genuinely innocent people will be executed and that there is no possible way of compensating them for this miscarriage of justice (By the way, you never know which new technologies will be invented that could prove someone’s innocence; 40 years ago DNA tests weren’t even dreamed of).
B)why kill people who kill people to show killing is wrong.
C) Life in prison is a worse punishment and a more effective deterrent.
D) The prisoner’s family must suffer from seeing their loved one put to death by the state, as well as going through the emotionally-draining appeals process.
Causing someone’s death in a premeditated manner. That sounds pretty much like murder to me.
