Errant Signal: Half-Life

I hate to break it to you but the people who think this are probably more than the whiney kids who enjoy playing it.

One other thing he said that was laughably wrong was when he said that Half-Life was like a rollercoaster that will only show new content when you get to certain plot points. ALL story-based games are like that, linear or non-linear, all games that have a story with goals to be completed in order to advance the story are like that.

I don’t know about you, but I stopped listening around the time he said that Half-life is the most beautiful tunnel ever. From all the linear FPS I’ve played, Half-life and its sequel feel bigger and more alive than most sandbox games I’ve ever played. Fuck, if you want a beautiful tunnel, then Battlefields 3 singleplayer fits that description so perfectly that its almost criminal.

BF3 was too linear, to the point that it is indeed a flaw. If Half-Life was as linear as BF3, I could understand him saying that Half-Life’s linear-ness is faulty, but it isn’t, Half-Life is just linear in the sense that you have to get to a certain area to advance the story, which isn’t faulty. The guy is just biased, he thinks that because a game doesn’t give you a bunch of plot changing choices, or doesn’t have multiple tactics or routes to get to an area, that it’s flawed. He is NOT a good reviewer at all.

In the end of a game usually the same thing happens to everyone, unless you have a choice of how it ends. GTA IV was interesting, i liked how you can choose to kill a character or spare his life later on seeing him and doing something with that person. And in the end you had a choice of which ending you want.

Is it just me, or does this guy seem to, well, not actually like video games. Its not for the fact that he doesn’t like half life, but that his crititism seems to me to be a more of “this is why ALL games are bad” rather than actually picking out flaws in half life, if he didn’t like characters, player npc dynamics and even going as far as calling " epic visual sequences" practically boring, then he shouldn’t really be playing video games.

He’s in love with non-linear sandbox games, and he expects every game to have free choice, an open world, etc. He doesn’t know how a plot works in a video game.

wow that was fast… :expressionless:

That’s why they call me the FLASH…oh wait…
