Well, for me, they bottlenecked SlightlyMad Studios, the devs of the r=most recent NFS game, Shift.
Because the studio had to stick to the yearly NFS release schedule set by, ahem, EA, the game was severly lacking in areas where this developer excels at, namely the simulation elements of driving games. SlightlyMad are mostly comsisted of the people who made GTR2, that there great racing sim.
Thankfully, the physics in Shift seem to have come out OK, but the game is still far from what the studio is capable of.
