DirectX 8?

Hi I have a little suggestion for you guys.

There are some people who plays this mod doesn’t have a graphic card that can run on DirectX 9 smoothly (includes me). Can you guys make it also playable for DirectX 8 mode?

You can force Directx 8 mode but I believe the mod would get glitchy like that. Also, I believe the version of the engine that the mode uses dropped support for Directx 8, so the whole experience might be buggy.

Either way, there’s nothing either Valve or the BM Dev Team can do to improve your case.

To force directx 8, right-click on the Black Mesa entry in your Steam games list, click properties, click Set Launch Options and type this in: -dxlevel 81

You can also try -dxlevel 80 if the former doesn’t work.

If all that fails, invest in a better graphics card or a whole new computer, most likely.

The game wouldn’t get too glitchy if the game was made compatible for older versions, I could play other games that uses Source 2009 without any missing textures (the glitchy thing).

Well, like I said, Valve no longer supports Directx 8 and the BM Team can’t do anything about that.

I mean, c’mon, at some point you gotta upgrade that graphics card.

We don’t use 2009, we use the 2007 SDK.

2007 SDK only dropped suppport for DX7, so DirectX 8.0 and 8.1 were still supported.

Alll of the Source Games uses 2007 Engine (OrangeBox) and tried to play them on DX 8.1, how could this game not support it? :[

All Valve retail games moved to 2009 and up, 2007 is used for mods. As to why the lower DX levels do not work I’ve no idea, would need to ask a coder I suspect.

What exactly is the problem? I just tested with “-window -dxlevel 80” parameters and it worked fine. Granted, graphical quality suffered (obviously) and there were a few graphical bugs (no HUD post-process, some weapons have the missing texture checkerboard, among a few others) but it was by no means unplayable.

If you don’t have DirectX 8.0, you should buy a new graphics card and/or computer…

I tried DX8 before I upgraded my video card from an old ATi to an AMD Radeon HD 6600, and it was very buggy. Particles were little white/blue/red/green squares (unless you set Shadows to Medium) and every NPC had blood spattered everywhere on them, looked like big red spiders. Unless you want a buggy and not very good experience, I would either play with DX9 and deal with the lag or buy a new video card. The AMD Radeon HD 6600 is very good, and only $70.00 ($49.99 after rebate) on Newegg.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
