Dark Shift: Mod Idea

You didnt play episode two? Shenanigans.

@Adam: Nope, Barney makes no appearance in Ep2 whatsoever. But given the fact that he leaves C17 a not too insignificant amount of time before Gordon and Alyx, I wouldn’t rule out seeing him in Ep3.

I also agree with the suggestion for setting the mod so that the end is the beginning of HL2. Just sounds a good idea.

One of the missions has to be gathering beer to give to Gordon later.

The idea is solid. Just remember you can have a whole section about what happened in the two weeks Gordon and Alyx were in the slow teleport. Barney was most definitely leading the rebellion without Gordon. Also there are whole section missing like what was going on in City 17 while Gordon was on the coast. I’d be willing to help with story and maybe a script if needed.

It was one week, not two.

The more you know!

Still the idea is the same Barney was leading the rebel forces for that week there are 168 hours in a week so you got a lot of time to work with.

I have, it was just a while ago, and I wouldn’t remember if Barney had a small appearance or not.

Yeah, that’d be good. I wasn’t even thinking about the time gap when Gordon and Alyx were teleporting.

They didn’t actually say, but it has been rumoured that he will be your companion, other than Alyx for episode 3.

So… who knows.

I think this idea is reaching a little too high. If you want to start a mod, unless you are really experienced, you should try and start with something small or it will never get off the ground.

That’s why I’m asking to see who wants in.
I think it’s worth it.

I want in.

I used to map for a mod called Prison Island (Pi| for short) but I quit due to the lack of time to motivate towards the mod. But I did make a bunch of concept maps, and they used a bunch of my concepts out. So I could be a mapper for the mod and such. I can give you a portfolio if you wanted.

EDIT: BTW I like your idea and in fact I had one that was similar not too long ago.

Yeah, I’m surprised no-one’s already making it.
I know there’s an Alyx mod, which let’s you be Alyx in Half Life 2.

I’d be happy to take people forward with this. And make progress. I myself am starting to learn how to make decent maps, I could work with a few of you who want to be in on this as well.

Send me a PM if you are interested as well. I’d appreciate that.

I also had this idea. Will help with the story!

whenn i saw the thread, i read Dark Shit : Mod Idea… First I was like :o , then i feeled like :what: , after this it was :FFFUUU:

I’m a writer. I focus a lot of my time learning how people convey (or fail to convey) their thoughts through the spoken word. I’d be more than happy to help you with dialogue and voice acting.

One thing I hate to see in a mod is a lack of adequate voice acting, interesting dialogue and character development/motivation. Well, that’s three things, but I also hate not being able to form an attachment to the characters.

IMO Barney should speak, maybe with the assistance of simple hand gestures so the player knows he’s talking. But then there’s the problem of the player running off while Barney’s talking. You may have to work the story so that there’s no where for the player to go while dialogue is going on, and you may even (and i know this is a painful idea for a HL game) take control from the player, though leave it in first-person. Cinematics are pretty common in a lot of mods though.

If you don’t have a coder I don’t see this going very far though.

True, I have had a few PM’s from mappers, and that’s brilliant, but a coder, that’s like the main structure of the mod itself.

So, if there are any coders that are interested, that would be really good.

Adam, it depends on what you want to change as to the extent you need coders, obviously if you want to add new functionality you need coders, but if you are just adding story, then you can do it with the standard hl2 code.

I don’t really have much in the style of Half-Life. But I’ll cook up some examples soon.

You have to make up some crazy theory on what a Dark Shift is. Otherwise I do not support your mod. Love the idea though.
