Crash @ "Surface Tension" on Manjaro Linux

Hi there, first off I’d like to say I did look for the “DMP (minidump) file” - however I was unable to locate it (I can happily upload it if someone can point out the location of it for Linux).
(I will also add a .html file with my ‘hardinfo’)

Okay, so I’m on the mission / level “SURFACE TENSION”.

There’s a part where a helicopter explodes and each time the game will crash.

I’ve taken a screenshot of the crash info - hopefully someone will be able to figure out what’s going on…

also, do you HAVE TO blow up the helicopter to progress? It seems the rest of the level continues behind a sealed blast door, however I’m unsure if the helicopter needs to be destroyed in order for you to progress or not?

it would be fantastic if I was able to pass this part of the game without having to blow-up the helicopter, as, although that wont fix the issue; it’ll bypass it…

anyway - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you!

Don’t forget to ask/search in the Dedicated Linux forum for Black Mesa.

Thanks, I’ll make a post about it there. Is there a way to get the attention of a admin / moderator? I have mentioned it there prior to making the post here.

Thanks for the help

I thought the Helicopter crash bug was fixed in linux, but it would not surprise me if some systems still hiccup at that spot. This post from a developer makes me think that the fix has been pushed to the main version of the game, but I could be wrong and it still could be in the beta branch.

Regardless, the team is working on Linux and will continue to support it. https://steamcommunity.com/app/362890/discussions/1/340412628175324858/?ctp=2#c154645299384760935

Please provide your system specs, OS and driver versions.
For example:
Debian stretch
Linux 4.8.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.8.5-1 (2016-10-28) x86_64 GNU/Linux
i7-6700K CPU
32GB RAM
GeForce GTX 750 | nvidia-driver 367.57-2

I have seen a few suggestion to disable gibs for this crash, you might try this.

In case your saved game or autosaved game is corrupt try the following.
Restart the chapter by picking an unlocked chapter from the New Game menu.
Or you could just restart the individual map.
Type status in console, make note of the map name (example bm_c2a4c ). Then type “map bm_c2a4c” into console. This will start the map as a new game.

Howdy @RedEye!

Thanks for the help on the forums & on Steam!

Below is a C&P of what I posted on the Steam forums, thanks everyone.

Thank-you so much for taking the time and confirming there is a bug with that particular area of the game RedEye - I was worried it might have been an issue with my hardware…

I’ll link my specs both here and on the forums (as best I can, I give new meaning to the words ‘idiot’ and ‘noob’ heh).

  1. Manjaro Linux 17.0
  2. 4.9.16-1-MANJARO
  3. Intel® Core™ i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz
  4. 15GiB (apparently?)
  5. VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] (rev a1)

As I said I’ll try those commands you suggested…

Quick question; do you -HAVE TO- blow up the helicopter in order to progress? Or is it an event that’s optional and you don’t need to blow it up?
I Ask because I was able to get down there and kill all the NPC’s but still cannot figure out for the life of me where it is I need to go…
I’m assuming you do in fact need to blow up the helicopter but I’m praying this isn’t the case…

either way thank-you again i[/i] for taking time to help me - I’m really enjoying this game so far and am bummed my progress has been halted.

All the best

-Matthew

UPDATE:

I tried

violence_hgibs 0
violence_agibs 0

and it still crashed sadly… Thanks for the suggestion though

Although this isn’t a “fix” I was able to get past the crash by opening the terminal ("`" key) entered “sv_cheats 1” and then “noclip”.

I then Noclip’d through the blastdoors, turned noclip off and sv_cheats back to 0 saved & quit.

I returned to the game (so achievements could be turned back on) and was able to continue past the bug.

As I said clearly this isn’t a fix but if, like me you want to pass this - this will help.

Hope this gets fixed soon / helps someone.

We normally scan our public forums are I will bring this to the attention of the team.

Hey,

Getting the same crash, though earlier in the map. Also this is probably the same as Crash on Surface Tension when exploding fuel truck/helicopter

Thought it was the APC exploding first, but then found it didn’t crash when I destroyed it with the Gauss gun instead of the RPG, and then that it did crash when exploding the alien grunt gibs. I guess that’s already known. For what it’s worth I’ll attach my screenshots of the crash:

And specs:

Xubuntu 16.10
Linux 4.4.0-77-generic #98-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 26 08:34:02 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
AMD FX™-8350 Eight-Core Processor
8GB RAM
AMD Sapphire R9 270X | 3.0 Mesa 12.0.6

Is the fix still not pushed to the main branch? Jeez…
