If the file system is corrupted that isnt too bad
But if the actual disc is corrupted it may be very hard to recover data.
Is it FAT32 or FAT formatted they are vulnerable to File system Corruption
After hard shutdowns or unexpected disconnections the drive file system could corrput attempt doing a CHKDSK on it if nothing else works.
P.M me if that doesnt help.

Formatting worked, the HDD is usable now.

Recuva is currently at 21% and has recovered 37639 files. I hope picking out the useful ones won’t be too difficult :expressionless:

Good to hear. Make sure you don’t write anything to the drive, let Recuva do its thing. Sometimes you’ll get a number of directories that have nonsense names (i.e. your folder that was previously called “Rock Music” may be “AE92348YYC”) but you can use WinDirStat on the recovered files and sort by file type.

Yeah, I almost copied a load of music to it before realizing that might overwrite lost files. WinDirStat sounds handy, thanks.

should have gave GetDataBack a shot… it recovered almost 99% (500gb) of my files after my MBR and primary partition table got wiped off the face of the earth.

now you can safely throw it out and get a new one, I would keep the usb to sata adapter, never know when you might need to reinstall windows on a comp with no CD drive.

on the uphand, they could replace your drive and have better luck at recovering the files, and reinstall them onto fixd/replacement.
