Comment on the Soundtrack (by Joel Nielsen)

Question - track from leaked footage is removed from the game or just replaced with the On a Rail 2 track ? I’m asking because leaked video made so great impression on me that I’d like to put the old soundtrack file in the game after downloading it.

That’s because it’s not Kelly Bailey. He shouldn’t fucking strive to be Kelly Bailey, he should strive to be Joen fucking Neilsen.

Question for Nielsen: Have you composed any shorter pieces for the mod, such as “stinger” pieces under thirty seconds used as incidentals? Half Life had more than a few pieces like that.

My rationale for asking: I was planning on reorganizing the tracks in a separate iTunes playlist to burn to a disc and run through Half Life again with the songs playing over the proper chapters (sans, of course, the Xen tracks).

The old OAR track was replaced with the new one. The old OAR track was one of the weaker tracks in my opinion, and kinda stood out a bit from the rest of the music in regards to the overall feel.

For those of you that prefer, simply download the old track from my website (media page), and copy it into the music folder once the game is released.

Personally I think the new OAR track fits the area and the combat better. (it also ties in with the OAR-1 song.)

Yes there are 8 or 9 extra ambient tracks that are not a part of the soundtrack, but are in game. I long questioned whether or not to include them, but in the end decided to leave them out. Some of them are a minute long, but most are around 30 seconds.

Speaking of Xen, I’m really curious as to what your take on a track like this would be.

Gonarch’s Lair

I think it’s by far one of the weirdest and most “alien” songs HL had, and I can’t wait to even get an idea of what kind of weird shit music-wise we will hear in Xen.

Awesome soundtrack, perfect for BMS. Lots of building tension. Definitely loading this onto my iPhone…

Was happy to pay for this and I hope you continue to produce more good work!

I don’t want to say much about Xen right now, but the pieces will start quite somber, and build up from there, as the game progresses toward the final boss fight.

I’m holding out until the mod releases to hear the soundtrack, since I want to hear them in their proper context, but reading this thread is making it hard to resist temptation!

I would also be very much interested to hear the story and the mind-work behind each track.

I’ve noticed some similar patterns with some other game soundtracks (just to be clear: I’m not mentioning this in any negative way), and I’d like to see if I’m right in this (is this a conscious tribute/decision, just a subconscious influence or just coincidence). Just as an example, one track (Apprehension - Mesa Remix) reminded me of World of Goo’s (!) “Screamer”. (I’m not an expert in music -just standard knowledge, so perhaps I’m seeing connections where there are none).

Also, what’s with “Select Amount: 4” in the paypal donation “order summary” ?

I only listened to the four that said they wouldn’t be in-game, because I want to hear the rest when I play it. It was surprisingly difficult to not listen to the rest…I still want to…

Must…resist…

Hopefully Nielsen gets some commentary nodes in the mod =P

We’ve got hostile… ngggggggggh

Putting the Soundtrack on my mobile…listening 24/7

I’ve been lurking for like 3 or 4 years now, and registered just to say how amazing this soundtrack is. Fantastic job Joel!

I want to thank everyone that worked on the mod for putting so much time into the project. Can’t wait to play, just have to wait 10 days.

Great soundtrack

My only comment would be that there are no track #'s in the mp3’s. So I’m listening to it in alphabetical order by default. Would be nice to have that info in the files.

Add me to the list of people who’ll wait for the mod to listen to it.

Also, while Mr. Nielsen’s here, I was wondering why the original Black Mesa Theme isn’t the game? I loved that track!

This sounds nothing like hollywood composers at the moment hollywood has an obsession with stuff that sounds like Hans Zimmer and dubstep.

Yup.
Soundtrack is amazing.
