Comment on the Soundtrack (by Joel Nielsen)

In all honesty, it never really fit anywhere. Not even in the menu. It is just a little bit too ‘sweet’ for the games tone. (This was one of the first songs I wrote, before the game was playable.)

I remember it playing on an old version of the site - I always knew where I was in the Tubes when I heard that song (y’know, besides the fact that I’d typed the URL in the address bar).

Perhaps, but I liked it. It was the first song I heard during the early years so it’s pretty much affiliated within my mind when talking about BM.

Very good soundtrack Joel. I’ve been playing it in the background so I haven’t associated the different tracks with the names, but I like it all.

I’ve got one question though, on your website you say that it is (will be?) up on Google Play, Amazon, and iTunes. Any idea on when that’ll happen? I’ve got some Play credit and would prefer to use it on your soundtrack over anything else.

Really Joel, the soundtrack you made is brilliant and I hope you get a chance to get noticed because it is really something amazing for a mod.

Anyone else hearing some White Rose Movement in the ‘We’ve Got Hostiles’ track?

Tracks like Questionable Ethics1 make me wonder whether you were inspired a bit by Audiomachine, Joel.

Were You?

-Even just a tad?

Yes, they will all be up shortly. Most likely itunes first. (although they were all submitted at the same time.) I didn’t realize it would take quite so long for them to be processed though.

Not that I am aware of. The artist name doesn’t ring any bells. But I hear a lot of music… so there’s always a possibility. It would not have been intentional though.

Are the Google Pay, iToons - versions gonna be higher quality?

You know, I’m probably in the minority here, but I was never really a fan of the original BM theme or the Office Complex theme I heard. I was glad to see you renixed those for the final version, I think the remixes, while sounding more like “ambience” just fit with the tone of HL better.

Thanks for the answer, Joel. Pricing info?

I love how the Black Mesa Theme Mesa Remix is the original theme, just slowed down and reversed (and with a few added effects).

To Joel: Nice job with the soundtrack. I compared the new tracks to the ones up on the site years ago and I’ve gotta say, I’m loving the new ones. Thanks for an amazing soundtrack to an amazing game!

Oh wow, your right it’s backwards. Interesting it makes it really distorted seeming. I guess it also seems appropriate for going back to Black Mesa. Reversing time and all.

Is the Unforseen Consequences track the one that plays immediately after the RC? I remember it sounding a lot creepier and more omininous in HL1

Really good job Nielsen!!!
I think that it was very good that you improved some of the old tracks like Office Complex, Surface Tension.

My most favourite tracks are:

1.Anomalous materials
2.Questionable Ethics 1
3.Residue Processing
4.Surface Tension 1
5.Surface Tension 2
6.Surface Tension 3
7.We have got hostiles
8.End Credits Part 2
9.Forget About Freeman
10.Lambda Core
11.Office Complex
12.On a Rail (old track)

I’ve had the original BM Theme since 2007 (and loving it) and I was glad seeing it still included in the new release… because … that’s what it is! At least in the ZIP I downloaded from this site…

Joel, if you really write down a sort of track-by-track “interview”, basically your thoughts on every track, how they came together and such, I’d take your notes and create a digital booklet PDF with them. I would love to! Awesome work, I’m already listening the whole day.

I also made two custom covers yesterday, I hope that’s okay for you?

Of course. I really like this as well.

As for a breakdown on each track, I’ll see what I can throw together. It’s a bit crazy at the moment, so I may not get to it for a few weeks.

Man, the cut On a Rail track has grown on me so much. I think I might actually put it ingame.

Although, the new one for that part sounds a lot like HL2 and probably fits better.

Joel I had to register just to tell you what an awesome job you’ve done. I’ve got all your previous black mesa stuff, and have been showing it off and repping you for quite awhile now, and listening to the final product, you’ve really outdone yourself.

I do have a question tho. I noticed that the bitrate was quite low. I was wondering if you would realease the soundtrack in at least 320kbps for us audiophiles. The more bitrate the better! I’d gladly pay for a higher quality release as would others i’m sure!

Thanks for your hard work and brilliant composing!

if you could post links to any other projects or where your other works are posted, that would be great!
