:retard:
Wow…well I made my own ide 40 pin to ide 44 pin(laptop hdd) adapter without soldering anything, I just attached each wire together one by one…
How much would it cost to ship an old laptop from Sydney to Denver?
That really sucks Catz, I’ve had this problem before and I couldn’t fix it…
Yeah, if it really can’t be fixed, I mean we all have spare parts, and a dev being unable to play BM on release would be ridiculous. I personally have an old video card I’d be willing to part with… but it’s kinda shitty.
Ditto. I have a motherboard and CPU I’d be willing to part with in the interest of building Catz a new non-Gateway computer.
You should start some sort of donation thing up, I know I’d be willing to help out Katz (she’s cool) with something TOTALLY UNRELATED TO THE MOD AND WOULD NOT IN ANY WAY BE ILLEGAL TO COLLECT FUNDS ON, such as fixing a computer.
I have a 430 watt psu if you need it.
Personally, I’d get the thing taken to a Geek Squad or something, if not for repair, then simply to be sure of the problem before buying something. I’ve been in a couple similar situations before. Least similar I got caught in a reboot loop and had to copy my data into a new hard drive. Most similar was my machine suddenly crapping out like the plug got pulled. Did my research and realized it was my PSU suddenly dying. Geek Squad guys agreed, and my baby is back in shape with a 600 watt.
Good thing is, if it is the board, purchase shouldn’t be hard. I’m building a high-power rig right now, and I got a top-rated board for $130 on Newegg. Installing a MB is a bitch, as I’ve discovered already, but if the MB is at all as 2005/2006 era as your processor (no disrespect, my PC is originally 2005 with an Athlon 64 x2 3800, which is just a bit less than yours) then you should be able to get something better than you have for a very small amount of coin.
Good luck there!
I order your pc be on before i do something to it!!! D:<
Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as you would like to believe. The computer in question is a Gateway, and like all large PC manufacturers, it uses a proprietary motherboard. In this case, that motherboard by itself would cost $229.00+ USD to replace…if you can even locate a replacement for it. Every source I’ve checked is out of stock on those, which isn’t surprising given that this model computer has been discontinued for quite some time.
Even lolGeekSquad would give her the same answer: It would be far easier and less expensive overall to replace the entire computer than it would be to try and replace the motherboard alone.
On a related note: as long as we’re offering up parts for a new pooter for Catz, I should go into detail on what I have available. I have the following:
One (1) AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200+ CPU, OEM style. That means no heatsink or fan for it. But I can guarantee the chip is in working order, as it was removed from my own computer when I upgraded to my motherboard’s maximum supported CPU.
I thought I also had a motherboard that would handle this processor, but I can’t find it and my brother assures me he claimed it from me a few months ago. It’s not unusual for me to forget such things, however, so it’s all good. =)
Anyway, I’d be happy to donate the above CPU to the cause of building Catz a new computer. Just tell me where to send it.
Dude, she’s like 40 or something with kids, I’m sure she can afford to buy computer parts herself if she desperately needs them.
I not sure about much but my computer but it has crashed many times and when this happened to mine i basically had to get a new computer because the motherboard was fried because we basically left it on all day and when we starting shutting it down it refused to come back on as it couldnt run the actual startup because well it was destroyed , i feel sympathy for you!
I am hoping this isnt what happened to you.
I am not really sure what advice i can give as everything has been said before so best of luck to getting it fixed and i am pretty srue all your data is there if it is your motherboard and hopefully a new computer isnt needed…
Welcome to the internet, where every female gets jumped on by men with overly active sperm production.
But hey, Catz should be happy, she’ll get free parts out of it ^^
Proprietary, eh? Pardon my ignorance, never owned a Gateway/Dell/etc. computer. My current machine is an HP, but I’m guessing that’s not the same.
Does proprietary in these circumstances mean all of the hardware will ONLY work with parts the maker provides, or is it a matter of the parts and case being designed specifically to fit in a certain way that prevents total retrofitting?
Pardon my asking. I just like understanding HOW something can be mitigated so I can better understand how to possibly find a way around those mitigations.
I don’t have any spare parts, but I can ship myself as a package. just gimme ur address.
I’d ship some parts over, but I have no spare parts that are modern and usable. I’ll check around and see if I can find any remotely modern parts.
Because some things bear repeating.
Read the above, then go away to ruminate upon it and what you’ve just said about friendly members of the community who just want to come together and help somebody out any way they can. Don’t come back until you’ve thoroughly washed the taste of your own foot out of your mouth. :fffuuu:
Jerk.
You’ve essentially answered your own question right there. :freeman: When dealing with the big PC manufacturers like Dell, Gateway, Compaq/HP, Sony, eMachines, etc. it’s very often the situation that the motherboard - especially the back panel connections, the location of the case standoffs, and the location of the CPU socket in relation to case ventilation - is specifically designed to fit the cases of a very narrow range of computer models. In fact, this is so common that you can pretty much assume it’s universal and that you won’t be able to fit a third party motherboard of any size into a first party case. This is at the very top on my list of reasons why I advise everyone I know and do business with to never, ever buy a PC off the shelf.
You were intelligent enough to figure out why being proprietary would be a problem - a fact I would like to compliment you on, given your professed computer ignorance - so I’m sure you can probably work out for yourself the primary reason for computer manufacturers to do this.
Anybody else have some computer parts they’d fess up to help CatzEyes93 out? So far we have a CPU, a PSU, and an older video card of unknown make and model.
Nah, this is still the internet, active sperm production drives it.
Shouldn’t we start a special thread for this?
BTW, I’m willing to donate an old video card (nVIDIA GeForce 6200TC-based) and a (I believe) 160GB-harddrive.
