I totally agree with this sentiment. When I heard JamesKane’s statement, I wanted to immediately start learning how to navigate one of those free Source-capable modelling tools, to introduce the option for a Stuka Bat. I’ve done simple animations before, and mesh adjustment, texture alignment, lots of QC editing, and texture modification… so it seems almost within my grasp, just I’ve done nothing in Source…
I think the Stuka Bat is the most interesting cut creature for three reasons.* Gameplay, because it’s probably halfway between the Barnacle (from above) and Headcrab (sudden lunge) attacks. It rests on the ceiling, maybe in groups. It falls and dives at the player. Seems like a very interesting weak little beast.
- Environmental expansion, because it shows an evolutionary link to the Tentacle (with its head design). I fucking love how Half-Life’s creatures have various common traits and body arrangements. (Bullsquid-houndeye-icky, for instance, follow a two-leg-and-monotailish arrangement. (Houndeye’s tail evolved into a springy leg.))
- Uniqueness, because it’s the only actively flying (not floating) enemy, as well as the only time we’d see a gray-purple themed monster.
After that, I really like the Archerfish. I believe the most horrifying experience is being dragged into the water, and if I interpret that alien’s body configuration correctly, it would shoot something sticky at the player and be able to lure them off an edge into the water.
