Blacked Out Screen

Ok, I know I’m new, but I downloaded Black Mesa Source yesterday with much anticipation, and have played it when I can up until the scene where you have to turn on the generators to use the train.

At the below place in the map, every time I get to the stairs, the screen goes black, and never comes back. At this level the screen also started to black out when receiving damage from anything.

Any ideas what would cause it, or how to fix it?

HELP! :fffuuu:

Yup, me too. I thought it was an issue with Wine (I’m playing on OS X) but apparently not.

I started as I approached the first lake of Radioactive goo. If I fired my weapon, the muzzle flash gave me some light but it was red, oddly enough. I ended up using the flash to navigate further to see if the screen would come back.

I then turned all the advanced videos settings down, and it seemed OK. So I thought I may have had a part of the game that messed with the setting or something. But alas, after returning the video setting back and taking a few steps forward the problem returned.

Any ideas? I may just turn the settings down and go on and see if I can get away with turning them back up…

Cheers!

EDIT: So, I changed the the settings put them way down and it looked like it was alright, HOORAY! But then I took a few more steps and the screen went black again AWW!

That sucks, you got my hopes up for a second, lol!

Ha! Sorry man. I’ve been trawling through the internet realm, looking for at least a clue about how to fix it. Sadly I remain clueless.

I thought about going back to an earlier save point and retracing, thinking maybe it was a dodgy save game… But no. It looks like Black Mesa ends here.

Are you on Windows? I assumed you were…

Cheers…

OK, so I managed to get through further than I did previously…

I set the resolution to the 800x600. It seemed OK. I think I will probably turn the resolution back up every now and then and see if the lights go out again. But for the moment it is working.

I also had the torch on when I crossed the point of no lighting, earlier, without the torch it worked although that’s probably not connected; maybe worth mentioning.

Good Luck…!

Yeah, I’m on XP Pro w/ 4 gig of ram. Radeon X300 graphics. I already turned the graphics down and the window on 800x600, it was patchy the other way. I tried restarting steam, the computer, even went back further and played forward. No dice.

Hmmmm… I don’t know what to suggest, its very odd that it does this randomly in the game and not at the start or something.

Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than me will be happy to suggest something…

Godd Luck!

Cheers!

Thanks, you too!

If you figure t out, please let me know, lol

I had the same issue. The old HL1 cheat codes still work with Black Mesa, so look em up you can bypass this a couple different ways:

1-Figure out which map code takes to the next level and just skip this part
2-basically the same idea, only using noclip. For me, as long as i stayed far enough above the toxic waste (which seems to cause the problem) i was fine. Just fly your way in the the big toxic chamber with the elevator. Here you’ll have to fly into the elevator i/o/t progress. The elevator is close enough to the toxic waste that the screen’ll go blue/black. If youve noticed, muzzleflashes still illuminate the world. Fire your weapon in order to see the elevator button, press it, and you elevate to the next “loading” screen. Once it loads, things should return to normal.

Also, in Black Mesa, you don’t need to change anything to activate cheats. Just go into options>keyboard>advanced options and check next the console box. Then type “sv_cheats 1” to activate cheat mode and you’re good to go.

It’s not a “fix” but at least it’ll allow you to move on with the game.

Yeah, that doesn’t work for me, the soon as I reach the stairs it blacks out, and the gun/explosions don’t light it up for me.

I have never used cheats before…and better write-ups/directions how to bypass to the next map?

Thanks.

I had a black screen once (probably after a level transition) and disabling HDR in graphics options solved the issue. I turned it on after a while and I’ve never encountered that problem again.

I just tried that, didn’t work. Thanks tho.

By the sounds of it bypassing looks like the only option…

As it goes I played some more and jacked the settings back up and no problems. Not that I’m bragging…

I hope you get it sorted!

I can’t get the cheat codes to work, either that or I’m doing it wrong.

Anyhow, there are the errors that pop up in the console:

The same thing is happening to me. I think it could be the “Redownloading all lightmaps” thing that’s doing it but I’m not sure. I hope there is a way to fix it because it only happens around the green acid stuff meaning id have to skip the entirety of Residue Processing.

That has happened to me as well, in that same spot!

No, it does that when ever you boot up a new map, whatever game you are playing.

Well, if you figure it out, please let us know!

May i ask what set up your using, just so i can identify a pattern if there is any?

in the mean time, try “mat_dxlevel 89” in the console, and see if that does anything.:jizz:

Also, i’m pretty sure the problem lies within the shader. Maybe taht will give you guys a general sense of direction.

I have an older computer, P4 3.6gh, 4 gig of ram, Radeon X300 Graphics. Runs CSm HL 1+2 without issue.

Tried the “mat_dxlevel 89” twice…it just freezes. First time I had to manually close it, the second it just crashed. :’(
