Black Mesa Introduction

Ok, this was discussed in the ‘ask the developers’ thread and so in attempts to refrain from spamming that thread up, I made this one.
Basically the discussion was about an intro movie (like Valve has in all of their games – ie. the movie with the valve in the guy’s head) for Black Mesa.
Here’s my latest concept:

I made this in Adobe Flash and After Effects.

Like the rain and sound, but the logo doesn’t seem to be well focused, don’t know if it was caused because of the shakes. As for the start and end maybe add a fade out/in? Good job anyway keep it up. Hopefully they will use it. Or get inspired by it.

The logo isn’t focused because of the youtube compression. I can indeed do a fade in / out on the start and end. And thanks!

While I like your idea of an intro movie, this one just seems too nautical.

I think resonance cascade effects would be better fitting than thunder and rain. And green flashes instead of lightning flashes.

I think that it would be cool if BM logo will be “teleported” on the screen

I would’ve removed the mesa-logo and just use the text + the ² (with an s) bit.

Mainly because it looks awful when stretched.

Here’s a high(er) def version: https://www.Dillxn.com/bm/Black%20Mesa%20Intro.mpg
I advise watching it full-screen.

Hm. The lightning effects are a little too… Hammer Horror-esque for my liking and the shakiness is still quite erratic.

Still looks neat, though.

The movie with the valve-headed dude is introducing the studio, it’s not a title screen. I imagine the BM title screen will be done like HL2, with a 3d background. In other words I don’t see much point in making an animated BM title/logo.

Good job Dillxn, you really captured the essence of Half Life and Black Mesa: shit flying around. Wait, no, that’s explosive diarrhea.

This logo could be introducing the team that made Black Mesa, too. They are just called the ‘Black Mesa devs’, after all.

Excellent job, but I agree with the others - it sounds a bit too cliched horror for me. I would suggest a grittier alternative - instead of rain falling, have dust or sand, something dry and dirty.
Either that or go with the Valve route - making it seem as though it’s on a film reel with a simple but ominous soundtrack over the top.

Is this something you’re just offering to them? If so, what has their reaction been, if any?

Their reaction has been this thread. So nothing :stuck_out_tongue:

But I do like all these ideas guys. Resonance cascade… here we come!

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
