Because only veteran gamers have the technical know-how and experience to spam the use button on every available object. The mechanics of old school adventure games have nothing to do with half-life at all.

I think the last time I played a game that involved mashing the use key was Wolfenstein 3D…to find all of the secret rooms. The doors, however, were fairly obvious in showing if you could open them or if they required a key. Maybe they should have just made all of the doors look the same and not give any idea that there are keys in places.
