And the point in Gman is to be slow and elongated, the French language is too fast to fit, you’ve had a warped view of HL.

You really think that? I, for one, thought the French-speaking scientist sounded actually angry about the government’s idea of silencing the witnesses. At least it’s a lot better than the wimpy English-speaking scientist and his whining about the same issue.
The English scientist to me sounds more desperate to say so much in little time, the french version just rolls off lines

Haha, maybe I should go and look for some Spanish lines from Half-Life, just to compare. I’m sure the scientists won’t sound as badass as the French ones, though.
EDIT: Here. Dang, I hate it when companies assume that all Spanish speakers sound as if they came from Spain. Nothing personal against the country, though - just a personal gripe. I would have preferred a neutral accent instead of this strange Peninsular drawl which can’t even be found outside of Spain.

Seems pretty obvious that, on top of interpretation of voiceovers being subjective, the HL1 production did not enforce sound processing standards on the localization teams. It does not come as a surprise after reading the genesis of HL1 in “Raising the Bar”.
Regarding spanish voice, yeah, I do feel sorry too. Hearing Alyx in HL2 talking like that, kind of robbed it of all the atmosphere for me.
Yup, that’s why I prefer subtitles. Besides, I bet writing subtitles is much easier (and cheaper) than subbing.
