The Soldier AI has always concerned me, ever since I saw the trailer, in which it looks like they are using Combine AI. Honestly, I hated the Combine AI, they were cannon fodder. They would run around shooting small terribly inaccurate bursts, the only time they felt like a threat was when there was lots of them. I loved the AI in Half-Life. They would stop to shoot accurate bursts, retreat, sprint everywhere, and toss grenades a lot.
I’m hoping it’s similar in BM.

I agree that hl1’s AI was way better, and more fun.

That too, a shotgun grunt could drain your health very quickly. But SMG Grunts were just total cannon fodder. They couldn’t shoot for shit and would lose 1v1 with a rebel 100% of the time.

The difficulty between Combine and hgrunts still really isn’t in the AI. The hgrunt AI seems really good till you play again… then you realize that they’re either standing still and eating your bullets or hiding in a place you can never reach and spamming nades.
The REAL difference in difficulty, IMO, is because hgrunts can take 3/4 of a clip and Combine can take (literally) two bullets before dying. That’s not to say the AI didn’t have a factor… if the Combine hid and spammed nades, they’d probably be a little harder to kill too… but I think the real issue is how hard to shoot down the hgrunts are compared to Combine.
I think not, Raminator. I played Half-Life for the first time last year, only completing it in November. I can say they were a lot harder to kill then Combine soldiers. The facts that the took like a full MP5 mag., threw nades at you, and took cover make them much harder then the cannon fodder known as Combine soldiers.
Just because they are harder to kill dosn’t mean they have better AI.:facepalm:

Combine: Spraying with the SMG works… easily. Shots with the Magnum practically anywhere will kill them in just one hit.
HGrunt: Spraying with the SMG works… after a VERY LONG TIME and a huge drain on your own health (from them returning fire), assuming that they haven’t naded you by that time. Only headshots with the Magnum will kill them instantly. Doing this also causes a cloud of blood to appear from their heads.
Combine: They chuck grenades. The grenades have a very obvious click… click… clickclickclickclick noise before exploding… not to mention that they have a bright red trail that practically SCREAMS “return to sender”. “Return to sender” in this case is made ridiculously easy with the Grav Gun.
HGrunt: They spam grenades at you, even if they’re not very good at aiming the toss sometimes. But all you have to go on is the “clunk” noise of the grenade and instinct as to when it will blow up. You can’t return to sender; the only thing you can do in this case is run like hell… a lot of the time the only way to run is straight into a Shotgun grunt too.
Combine: AR2 Energy Orbs… all they really do is deal a chunk of damage and push you back a bit. You can also catch them with the Grav Gun.
HGrunt: SMG Grenades… They aren’t always so great at aiming these, but those things are scary since they can gib you real easily.
Combine: They run away from your grenades.
HGrunt: They duck in place and cover their heads a lot of the time when you chuck a nade at them…
Combine: Ragdoll physics. :3
HGrunt: Death animations… and gibs. :retard:
I don’t think you all understand what AI is.
AI isn’t how hard it is to kill them. you could say that a box has better ai than a headcrab. It’s their thinking, dodging, hiding, team cooperation… thing like that.
and the Dev’s already said that they are creating the AI so that it can cooperate in a team and overall not suck, so I’m not even sure why we are having this conversation anyways.
If it’s anything like the Duplicates in F.E.A.R., i’ll be happy.
Killing those guys was somehow extremely satisfying.

Hgrunts totally had Rubberband AI, that is not better AI, just a cheap imitation.
All I realy think you guys should do is make the soliders feel more human like valve did in hl1. Having the soliders show self preservation, showing that they want to live. doing things like retreating when wounded.(You can dispute that the combine are modded human but that shouldnt have effect on self-presevation )
I’m pretty sure they’ve got that covered
