Dude, just get the original, there is really no difference at all between source and the original except for the water. If its your first time playing, you should definently do it unmodded, just how it is right when you buy it. The so called “hd” mods just make everything look like crap. GO WITH THE ORIGINAL.

I play with the HD pack on most times because I like the shotgun and the M4 noises. They feel like more powerful guns.

Well I guess it’s sort of a sign of the times. People keep watching remakes of things instead of the original movies, they probably do the same with video games. Take the Resident Evil remake, for example. (Then again, I didn’t like it because play control was impossible. RE4 was barely tolerable)

I actually prefer the look of vanilla HL instead of the texture pack. I first played it with the texture pack because I first played it on the PS2 but I prefer the original look.
