AudioTool

This is pretty impressive. It’s a browser-based digital audio workstation which includes social networking tools to share the music you create with it. I’ve been messing about and created my first track, check it out and post your tracks if you got 'em!

Epic shit.

I was about to ask myself why I spent years learning the guitar. But then it hit me: so I can actually have fun playing music according to my own skill, and not according to the generic automation of beats with fancy effects.

Neat little tool for the ones that like sound, but I prefer music.

You’re right, sound design and music composition takes no skill or knowledge. I bet you write original songs on guitar, too.

Ha cool find mattemusse! Fun to play with. Reminds me of Reason with the wires and all. I’m kinda impressed that this was programmed n flash. I knew AS3 added much better support for sound (EQ’s/visualizers were not possible in AS2) but not all of this.

Would be nice if they made some documentation for it. It’s easy to make some nice beats, but compiling into a good song is proving to be difficult.(when compared to comparable applications) I must be missing something.

Composing a song isn’t that hard (note the “a song” part) for anyone. Playing a song is.

Those applications (and any electro DJ for that matter) stick to the first bit. Musicians do both.

I consider myself a musician (very amateur) because I often compse my own songs on guitar. Obviously they’re basic and easy, but I still consider myself and anyone like me more skilled than anyone that just line up loop A and loop B and add effect C.

@firetime I agree they need docs, the note sequencer is straightforward but I can’t figure out pattern sequencing, and I haven’t gotten sidechain compression working either. The “wired” interface is cool but it ends up being a pain in the ass when you have a bunch of instruments going. And there’s no way to browse thru other people’s songs by popularity or anything. Lots of potential though.

@bolteh the idea that electronic musicians aren’t “real” musicians because they choose digital instruments rather than analog is laughable snobbery.

Well, if you consider a computer/looper an instrument… But I don’t.

Anyone can drag and drop a bunch of 120bpm loops in a random order and have it sound good (I did on my first messaround with Garageband).

Only electro DJs I respect are those that create experimental/industrial electro, because at least they try to make something different.

So are you saying electronic music isn’t created by musicians, and the tools they use aren’t instruments? How does “lining up loop A and loop B and adding effect C” differ from playing a traditional instrument? They are both producing music. How is knowing what samples, effects, generators etc to use in order to produce a more varied sound than a mere guitar can less skillful than playing chords and stuff?

Did you just say “Composing isn’t hard. Playing a song is”?

What the fuck are you trying to say?

Bolteh… your being annoying.

Yah matt, I’ve been trying to find other peoples creations in an attempt to find examples of some more advanced capabilities of the program.

“you’re not a musician if you use a sequencer” is a laughable statement, we really don’t need to turn this thread into a trollfest over it. Bscly put up or shut up, if it’s so easy to make great music then lets hear your masterpiece. That’s what this thread is for, not musical snobbery.

Drag and drop loops and beats on a set beat on any kind of computer: 1 second (6 seconds if you count the time it takes to set the track up)

Learning chords, learning scales, learning technique, training your ear for tone recognition, getting proper equipment, learning coordination between mind and hands: 8-9months, if you get a lot of professional training, 1,5 year if you try to learn it on your own.

That’s the difference.

Hey I can oversimplify things.

But to the thread in hand, I can’t load the app for whatever reason. Seems kinda gimmicky from what I’m reading.

And then you pluck a second note that isn’t part of that scale and it sounds way off. Song destroyed.

Its loading really slow today. I guess that’s the downside of online software. It’s not particularly “gimmicky” to be honest, it’s basically FLstudio in a browser.

Bolteh, again, your being annoying.

I WORK in a sound studio. What you just explained is what kids did when coke music was still around. What we do is this studio is far from that. Apart from the usual multi track recording we do, We also use e-drums that are used in the creation of MIDI tracks that are loaded into sequencer (BFD) for generation. Also we use a special program (GUITAR RIG 3 by Native Instruments).

It’s not like these programs are crappy, Some professional rock bands use these sequencers in most, if not all, of their songs.

@matt here is a song that uses a bunch of stuff that I’ve been looking for. Also apparently yo can do piano rolls to set the key of the generators. So, this little flash program can do almost as much as FL standard. (with the exception of VST plugins)

Yeah, the piano roll is cool but there’s also a patter sequencer which is more convenient for drum tracks. I’m going to have to check other musician’s tracks to see how its done.

edit - nice FT, i didn’t know you could rename/re-color patterns like that. I haven’t gotten a chance to mess with the automation either. Link to your user page, i want to see if there’s a friends list or something.

yah, just click then a little arrow appears, select that and it’s like a right click context menu (the own downfall of flash)

ITT: Bolteh’s moronic elitism.

ITT: a disappointing but not entirely surprising lack of people sharing music which they created. somebody give me a track of yourself rapping to a metronome so I can remix it.
