Atomic PC - BM Preview

I must say, this has been a massively successful publicity stunt.

here are some screenshots of different games, you can imagine how will it all look after 2 years, Source is outdated even by today’s standards…

How can an engine designed to be constantly updated… “outdated”?

Look at HL2, then look at Ep2. Then tell me how the engine hasn’t kept up with the times.

Also, Source might not produce the beautiful vistas that Cryengine2 can. But is Cryengine2 as stable, not to mention easy to run, as Source? Nowhere near.

^This.

And I do believe that’s not a screen from Portal 2, it’s one of the advanced chambers of Portal 1.

Not to mention that all those engines have different focuses. Crysis has it’s Uberz graphix with crappy optimization of indoor sections, for instance. Ut2004 is designed for DM primarily, as is Quake, which is much, much older. Not to mention that they all have different art styles.
And for god’s sake, why does everyone say something is outdated just because it doesn’t have 100000000 polies per model? There is more to a game than bloody graphics, and besides, games like crysis are designed for supercomputers only, while Source was designed to run on just about everything, with no hiccups.

I will play the game regardless, but many people are expecting to utilize their newest graphics hardware to full extent.
That is the problem in today’s computing, amount of hardware built is significantly higher than number of high quality software that support such advanced technology…
People get disappointed, and they should at the end of the day since it’s not very good to have all those millions of high tech processors sitting there doing nothing just to end up in trash after 8 months. And I don’t even want to start speaking about the environment…
I know it’s not your fault and I’m not accusing you for anything so don’t get me wrong…

Well, they shouldn’t get disapointed because it’s a brush-based engine. They should be overjoyed that something not made with 100% models looks so great. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Any modeler who knows how to use his tools can make a pretty enviroment, but it takes real skill, a real artist, to make Source and other brush-based engines sing. Modelers can be artists if they’re skilled enough, but to make something decent on Source, you HAVE to be an artist. It’s not optional like it is with modeling.

Last time i tried to make a map for cs 1.6 Hammer Editor dropped support for goldsrc, over 10 million players and they dropped support, way to go Valve…

^agreed Jeff
I tried doing some AI & NPC models for HL before I realized BMS even existed, didn’t end well but I left myself impressed (almost worthy of posting if I didn’t delete them). Their work is really worth the wait, and maybe by release these soo called differences in graphical terms will be gone(note that some of the shots posted may/may not have a significant time gap)

Really, I wouldn’t worry about it.

They didn’t “drop” support, they just made the version in the Source SDK geared towards…Source.

Use 3.4/3.5 if you want to work on GS.
You’ll probably need to go down the page, the links at the top are to the now-defunct VERC. Try Slackiller’s programs.

Can’t use any of them on my hardware, problem with ATI drivers or something, anyway tried GtkRadiant before I finally said f*ck that…
I wasted so much time reading how to use those tools and nothing worked the way it should…

all of your “other game screenshots” scream HI I’M A TROLL HOW ARE YOU DOING

sersoft, somehow I think 2000 out of 2291 posts you wrote are not much better than this one…
A picture is like a thousand words and on those screenshots you can see more than 10 years of game development.
It’s logical when someone is talking about game development and leaked pictures to expect some pictures…
Sometimes I really hate BM fans, you are afraid when someone is talking about this mod from a different perspective that you automatically attack and troll for no reason…

The images were posted out of context. Not only did you select some of the most bland source engine images available, especially those ancient BM screenshots, but nearly every other engine you selected you showed multiplayer stages, which as a rule can easily be more detailed than any lengthy single player map. Except Doom 3 which looks like shit anyways.
Not saying source is the best looking engine out there, it’s not. I’ll be quick to agree that Mirror’s Edge and Crysis look better than anything on the source engine. But it’s not bad either.

You made me upside down just to reading this pointless post.

If a game is good, then it doesn’t matter how bad the graphics are. I can play Super Mario and enjoy just just as much as I did when it was still a new game. The graphics won’t bother me.

The same applies to Half-Life. The bad graphics really don’t bother me at all. The only thing that bothers me is that I know the whole game by heart I’ve played it so much. Therefore I can’t enjoy the puzzles and get surprised as much anymore.

This is why I love the idea of Black Mesa: We will have a new way of seeing Half-Life. I don’t really care how good the graphics are, what matters to me is that it has been re-thought and re-done in a way that will make the game awesome once again. Good graphics are awesome, but I don’t care if they’re outdated. Black Mesa will be Half-Life, but very different. This is what I like so much about it.

But by the way, by today’s standards, I think Black Mesa’s graphics are amazing.

OH NOES! You did NOT just say that!

Srsly tho, they cannot be compared, because they’re different - they employ different artistic styles and they look, run and feel different. If they ran on the same engine or in the same time frame - sure, go ahead.

And for the record: DooM3 had some low-poly models and small textures here and there, but that doesn’t make the engine look bad, it’s the designers’ fault.

I think that’s what he was saying when he said it looked like shit.

Sorry but it’s true. Even though Doom 3 said ‘OMG BUMPMAPS AND REAL TIME SHADOWS’ I felt Half-Life 2 which came out about the same time had a far more realistic and believable game environment because they didn’t shy away from actually putting details in their textures… and also because they didn’t use specular like it was the second coming of Christ.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
