Ask an Atheist!!!

Islam did allow science to a much larger extent than Europe, but it was still controlled by the Mosque. Before the scientific revolution, the Islamic world certainly was ahead in scientific advances, but afterwards, the secularization of Europe allowed for much larger scientific advances.

imo islam has always been better for the world overall than christianity because except for in extreme sects it actually encourages advancement of knowledge a lot more than jeezus

Could you cite some reasons for that statement? I admit that I’m not an expert of Islam, but I’m not sure what you base that statement off of.

On the other hand, there is Al Qaeda :3

Now, seriously, maybe the Christianity being more restrictive is exactly what made science challenge it and become free of religion, while that could have not happened with Islamism. Of course this is just guessing.

So you are thinking more of the cultural view of areas dominated by Islam versus Christianity, yes?
I thought you were referencing texts, and teachings. My mistake.

yeah basically i meant overall contribution to humanity

Ah, well then I would have to agree that Christianity dominated cultures don’t tend to have a very good track record. These days some Islam dominated countries aren’t exactly shining examples either.

I often wonder if the world today totally lost religion, what would happen? Would there be a surge of advancement in global human knowledge, or would one potentially negative force be replaced by something else?

Any thoughts?

it would be replaced by something else, people will always find a way to manipulate each other

The problem is how the world would totally lose religion. Nowadays, people are totally dependent on religions. Taking the religion out of them would be like taking out a very strong drug out from billions of addicted people all at once. In other words, it would happen something like happened in Bolivia not so long ago when their president decided to fight against plantations of cocaine.

However, if the world slowly rejects religion on its own, I think it will gradually become a better place to live. Less discrimination, more mutual cooperation among people, less fear of questioning God, miracles, the existence of Jesus, whether Jesus’ life is just a Jew version of Buddha, less people fearing to meet other people that have different beliefs, race and sexual preference from you…

No one would be bothering you with rules of conduct you must follow without motive, but, instead, they would try to reason with you why this is right and that is not. Less judgement and more comprehension.

That will take a lot of time, though. We are too advanced on science when compared to ethics, I think it is about time to start to push moral forward.

That was before the radicals came to power…

Sorry to go back to this old post, but, when you refer to virgin mothers and holy sons, do you mean Isis and Horus in Egypt mythology or are there other mothers in other mythologies?

Hum… Zeitgeist seems to be some paranoid movie talking about three conspiracy theories. Well, I’ll take a look at it anyway.

I don’t know. It may not benefit humanity as much as atheists like to believe. Religious people are much more likely to donate to charity, for example. While humanity doesn’t need religion for morals, it does seem to help some along.

Also, in the modern world, and even in the world several centuries back, christianity has been a far greater force for advancement than islam. Now thats not saying much, but still.

There were plenty more, as I remember.

Yeah, Zeitgeist is pretty paranoid, but regardless of that, the stuff about religion was pretty interesting and at least seemed to be based on fact.

do u have a source for the charity thing

I’d have to dig it up. I heard about it on an NPR program about charity.

EDIT: Never ask me to look for a poll. I end up getting sidetracked immediately. Found this though. Pretty interesting.

pretty sure non-religious folk give to charity just as much

also, you’re forgetting the huge amounts of scientific accomplishments the islamic world achieved during and before the middle ages

also, i don’t know what christianity has done to be a force for advancement, other than being a circumstance

We’ve gotten back to whether or not Christianity was an inadvertent force for good, a question that is unanswerable. I will note that protestant christians were encouraging of scientific advancement, if only to piss of the catholics.

so it was an interior battle ?

On the topic of charity, Here ya go. Its for canada, but I think we can extrapolate.
